A Chapter from the Book
The Little Sand Cat - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL
In the heart of the desert, where the sand glows silver under the moon, lived a little sand cat. Its fur was pale sandy-gold with soft darker speckles, and its amber eyes sparkled like tiny lanterns. Each night it wandered the dunes alone, curious and quiet, listening to the whisper of the wind. The desert was wide and empty, but the little cat never felt lonely—not yet. 1
One moonlit night, the sand cat found a gap between two rocks it had never seen before. Beyond it lay a secret garden, where moonflowers bloomed and a tiny stream sang softly. The cat's small rounded ears twitched with wonder. It crept inside, its fluffy tail sweeping the cool sand. Everything shimmered, as if the garden was made of dreams. 2
Suddenly, a rustle! From behind a moonflower peeked a magical jerboa. It was small and delicate, with soft cream fur, huge dark eyes, and a long tufted tail. A faint silver glow traced its back, and a tiny star-shaped mark shone on its forehead. The jerboa froze, whiskers trembling. It had never seen a sand cat before. 3
"Don't be scared," whispered the sand cat, keeping very still. The jerboa's huge dark eyes were wide with fear, and its long tail curled tight around its tiny body. It looked ready to dash away. The sand cat remembered the water pouch tied at its neck. Slowly, gently, it untied the pouch and set it on the sand. 4
"Would you like some water?" the sand cat asked softly. The jerboa did not move. So the sand cat took a tiny step back and waited, patient as the moon. After a long moment, the jerboa's nose twitched. It hopped closer, one small hop at a time, until it could sip from the pouch. The water was cool and sweet. 5
The jerboa drank, then looked up. Its huge eyes were still wary, but something had softened. "Thank you," it whispered, its voice like a tiny bell. The sand cat smiled. "I'm glad you're here," it said. That night, they sat together under the moon, not saying much, just watching the moonflowers glow. It was a good beginning. 6
The next night, the sand cat returned to the secret garden. The jerboa was waiting by the stream, its silver glow faint in the moonlight. "You came back," it said, surprised. "Of course," said the sand cat. "I wanted to see you." They explored the garden together, hopping over moonflowers and chasing fireflies that danced like tiny stars. 7
Day by day, the jerboa grew braver. It showed the sand cat hidden paths and secret spots where the moonflowers grew tallest. "Watch this!" it said, and leaped high into the air on its long hind legs, its tufted tail streaming behind. The sand cat purred with delight. "You're amazing!" it said. The jerboa's star-shaped mark glowed a little brighter. 8
One night, they found a patch of moonflowers that had closed their petals. "They're sleepy," said the jerboa. "Let's sing to them," said the sand cat. So they hummed a soft desert song, and slowly, one by one, the flowers opened. The jerboa looked at the sand cat with wonder. "You're kind," it said. "I'm glad you're my friend." 9
The jerboa still had scared moments. When a shadow moved, it would hide behind the sand cat. "It's just a moth," the sand cat would say gently. "You're safe with me." The jerboa learned that the sand cat's words were always true. Trust grew between them, small and steady, like a moonflower opening petal by petal. 10
Then came a night when the jerboa was not waiting in the garden. The sand cat searched everywhere, its amber eyes worried. At last, it found the jerboa by the stream, its tail tangled in a thorny bush. The jerboa was trembling. "I'm stuck!" it cried. "Don't worry," said the sand cat. "I'll help you." 11
The sand cat worked slowly and carefully, nibbling the thorns away one by one. "Almost there," it murmured. The jerboa stayed very still, trusting the sand cat's gentle paws. When the last thorn fell away, the jerboa leaped free. It threw its tiny arms around the sand cat's neck. "You saved me!" it whispered. The sand cat purred softly. 12
That night, the jerboa led the sand cat to the very heart of the garden. There, under the biggest moonflower, they made a promise. "I will always share my water," said the sand cat. "And I will always share my garden," said the jerboa. Their friendship was like the moon: quiet, bright, and always there. 13
From then on, the desert nights felt warm and happy. The little sand cat and the magical jerboa explored the moonlit garden together, night after night. They chased fireflies, sang to moonflowers, and shared cool water from the pouch. The jerboa's silver glow shone brighter than ever, and its starshaped mark twinkled like a tiny star. 14
Other desert creatures noticed the warmth between them. "How did you become friends?" asked a curious lizard. The jerboa smiled. "Kindness," it said. "One small act at a time." The sand cat nodded. "And trust grew from there." They knew that friendship was the best treasure of all, worth more than any secret garden. 15
And so, if you ever wander the desert on a moonlit night, listen closely. You might hear a soft purr and a tiny bell-like laugh. Look for a pale sandy-gold cat and a glowing jerboa, exploring their garden together.
