Deep in the green forest lives Benny, a sturdy badger in a green scarf with yellow stripes who taps a hollow log every morning to keep a calm, steady beat. Not far away, Pip the woodpecker, wearing a tiny blue bow tie, drums on branches with his long beak, while Nutty the squirrel shakes leaves and seeds near the roots of a great oak. Each of them loves music, but none of them has met the others yet.

One sunny afternoon Benny follows a strange tapping and finds Pip, and the two discover that their slow and quick rhythms fit together like a happy conversation. Nutty bounces down to join them, and the three decide to form a forest band. After a windy night leaves fallen branches everywhere, they make their own instruments: a big round log becomes Benny's drum, a thin dry branch becomes Pip's rhythm stick, and a hollow twig filled with seeds becomes Nutty's shaker. At first their playing sounds messy, until Benny reminds them to listen to each other and the sounds begin to fit together like puzzle pieces.

When a woodland celebration is announced under the big oak, the friends practice every morning and evening, and Nutty worries that the other animals won't like their music. The story follows their performance and shows young readers how patience, practice and listening to one another can turn three different sounds into something beautiful. It is a warm tale for children about teamwork, courage before an audience, and the joy of making music together.

A Chapter from the Book

The Little Forest Orchestra - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

Deep in the green forest, where tall trees touched the sky, lived a sturdy badger named Benny. He wore a green scarf with yellow stripes, always loose around his neck. Every morning, Benny tapped on a hollow log with his strong claws. Tap, tap, tap! The steady beat made the whole forest feel calm and happy. Benny loved music more than anything. 1

Not far away, high in a tree, lived Pip the woodpecker. Pip had a bright red cap and a long, straight beak. He wore a tiny blue bow tie, even when he was pecking. Rat-a-tat-tat! Pip drummed on branches all day long. His quick tapping sounded like a tiny clock ticking. Pip loved music, too, and he loved to make people smile. 2

Near the roots of a great oak, Nutty the squirrel scurried about. She had a big fluffy tail and a red acorn cap with a little green leaf on top. Nutty loved to shake leaves and seeds. Swish, swish, swish! The soft sound reminded her of wind in the trees. Nutty loved music just as much as Benny and Pip did. She just hadn't met them yet. 3

One sunny afternoon, Benny heard a strange tapping. Tap, tap, tap! It wasn't his log. He followed the sound and found Pip pecking a branch. "Hello!" said Benny. "I make beats, too!" Pip chirped, "Your beat is slow and steady. Mine is quick!" They tried playing together. Tap-tap-tap-tap! It sounded like a happy conversation. They grinned at each other. 4

Just then, Nutty bounced down the trunk. "What's that noise?" she asked. "It's music!" said Pip. "Can I join?" Nutty shook a branch full of leaves. Swish, swish! "That's a lovely sound," said Benny. "Let's make a band!" Nutty's amber eyes sparkled. "A forest band! With instruments!" Pip flapped his wings. "But where will we get instruments?" 5

The three friends looked around the forest floor. Fallen branches lay everywhere after the last windy night. "These could be drums!" said Benny. "And drumsticks!" said Pip. Nutty found a hollow twig and filled it with tiny seeds. "A shaker!" she squeaked. They gathered branches, leaves, and seeds. Each friend chose what felt right. Their instruments were beginning to take shape. 6

Benny found a big, round log and tapped it gently. Boom, boom! The sound was deep and warm. He used two short sticks to hit it. "This is my drum!" he said. Pip chose a thin, dry branch that made a sharp click. "This is my rhythm stick!" he chirped. Nutty filled a hollow branch with seeds and shook it. "Shhh-shhh!" she giggled. "This is my shaker!" 7

They practiced every day. Benny kept the steady beat: boom, boom, boom. Pip added quick clicks: rat-a-tat-tat! Nutty shook her shaker: swish, swish, swish. At first, it sounded messy. Pip clicked too fast, and Nutty shook too loudly. Benny stopped. "Let's listen to each other," he said. They tried again, slower. Slowly, the sounds began to fit together like puzzle pieces. 8

Word spread through the forest. A woodland celebration was coming! All the animals would gather under the big oak. "We must play our instruments there!" said Nutty. Pip's eyes went wide. "In front of everyone?" Benny smiled. "We'll be ready. We just need to practice." They practiced every morning and every evening. The beat grew stronger, the clicks sharper, and the shaker softer. 9

The night before the celebration, Nutty felt nervous. "What if they don't like our music?" she whispered. Pip hopped close. "We like it," he said. Benny nodded. "And we made it together." They played one more time, just for themselves. Boom, rat-atat, swish. The sounds wrapped around them like a warm blanket. They fell asleep with music in their hearts. 10

The day of the woodland celebration arrived. Animals came from all over: rabbits, deer, mice, and birds. The three friends set up their instruments on a flat stump. Benny took a deep breath and began: boom, boom, boom. Pip joined in: rat-a-tattat! Nutty shook her seeds: swish, swish! The forest filled with a brand-new sound. 11

At first, the animals just listened. Then a rabbit began to tap her foot. A deer swayed his head. A mouse twirled. Soon, everyone was dancing! The beat was steady, the clicks were quick, and the swish was soft. Each sound had its own place. Together, they made something beautiful. Benny, Pip, and Nutty played with big smiles. 12

When the song ended, the forest erupted in cheers. "Encore! Encore!" shouted the animals. The three friends looked at each other and laughed. They played another song, then another. The celebration lasted all afternoon. Every animal wanted to dance. Nutty's shaker sounded like falling leaves, Pip's clicks like raindrops, and Benny's drum like a happy heartbeat. 13

After the celebration, the friends sat together under the stars. "We did it!" said Nutty. "We surely did," said Benny. Pip nodded. "Our different talents made it work." They realized that being different was a gift. Benny's steady beat, Pip's quick rhythm, and Nutty's soft shake all fit together perfectly. That was the secret of their harmony. 14

From that day on, the Little Forest Orchestra played for every woodland gathering. Other animals came to listen and dance. Some even made their own instruments. The forest was always full of music. Benny, Pip, and Nutty knew that teamwork made their music special. And they knew that friendship was the best sound of all.
