The Little Tree Kangaroo - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

High in the green rainforest, where the leaves whispered and the rain went pitter-patter, lived a little tree kangaroo. He had soft reddish-brown fur, a golden belly, and big dark eyes that watched the world go by. He loved his leafy home, but sometimes the tall trees felt very big and very quiet. He wished he had someone to share the branches with. 1

Every morning the little tree kangaroo climbed to his favorite branch and looked out over the rainforest. He saw bright butterflies and heard laughing birds, but no one stopped to play. His long creamy tail curled around the branch, and he sighed a small sigh. "The rainforest is beautiful," he said, "but it would be nicer with a friend." 2

One sunny day, a rustle came from below. Up climbed a fluffy cuscus with thick grey-white fur, round amber eyes, and a long spotted tail that curled like a question mark. "Hello!" said the cuscus. "I'm looking for someone to play with. Would you like to leap through the trees with me?" The little tree kangaroo's dark eyes grew wide and bright. "Yes!" he said. "Yes, please!" 3

The cuscus grinned and wiggled her pink nose. "Follow me!" she cried, and off she went, swinging from branch to branch. The little tree kangaroo took a deep breath and leaped after her. His strong climbing claws gripped the bark, and his golden belly bounced as he jumped. "Wait for me!" he called, laughing. "I'm coming!" 4

They leaped and bounded through the leafy canopy, two small friends in a giant green world. The cuscus showed the tree kangaroo how to balance on a swaying vine. The tree kangaroo showed the cuscus how to climb a trunk with tiny quick steps. "You're good at this!" said the cuscus. "So are you!" said the tree kangaroo. The rainforest seemed to hum a happy song. 5

They stopped on a branch to catch their breath. Below them, the rainforest floor looked like a soft green carpet. "Have you ever been this high?" asked the cuscus. The tree kangaroo shook his head. "Not this high," he said. "It's exciting!" The cuscus's amber eyes sparkled. "I know a secret place," she whispered. "An ancient tree with flowers that smell like honey. Want to see?" 6

The little tree kangaroo felt a flutter in his golden belly. He had never gone so far from his own branch. But the cuscus looked so friendly, and her spotted tail was already pointing the way. "I'll come," he said bravely. "Lead the way!" And they were off again, leaping through the leaves like two happy shadows. 7

The trees grew taller and the leaves grew thicker. The little tree kangaroo's short legs were tired, but he kept going. "Are we almost there?" he asked. The cuscus nodded. "Just a few more leaps!" she said. "You're doing great!" Her cheerful voice made the tree kangaroo feel strong. He leaped again, and again, until suddenly the leaves opened wide. 8

There it was: an ancient flowering tree, its branches heavy with sweet blossoms. The flowers were pink and white, and they smelled like honey and sunshine. "Oh!" breathed the little tree kangaroo. "It's beautiful!" The cuscus smiled. "I knew you'd like it." They climbed onto a big branch and sat side by side, sniffing the sweet air. 9

The cuscus picked a blossom and tucked it behind the tree kangaroo's tiny rounded ear. "Now you look like a flower king!" she giggled. The tree kangaroo laughed so hard his tail curled tight. "And you look like a cloud with spots!" he teased. They shared the sweet petals, and the ancient tree seemed to wrap its branches around them like a gentle hug. 10

The little tree kangaroo looked at his new friend and felt something warm inside. "You know," he said, "I used to feel lonely in this big rainforest. But now, with you, every branch feels like home." The cuscus's round amber eyes grew soft. "That's what friends do," she said. "They make the big world feel cozy." 11

The sun began to set, painting the leaves gold and pink. "Will you come back tomorrow?" asked the tree kangaroo. "Of course!" said the cuscus. "And the day after that!" They promised to meet at the ancient flowering tree whenever they wanted an adventure. The tree kangaroo's heart felt full. He wasn't lonely anymore. 12

That night, the little tree kangaroo curled up in his leafy nest. His long creamy tail wrapped around him, and he smiled in his sleep. He dreamed of leaping through the canopy with the cuscus, of sweet blossoms and spotted tails. The rainforest no longer felt big and quiet. It felt like a place where he belonged. 13

From that day on, the little tree kangaroo and the cuscus were the best of friends. They explored new branches and discovered secret vines. They played hide-and-seek in the leaves and shared honey-sweet flowers. The tree kangaroo learned that a good friend can turn a giant rainforest into a cozy home. And every branch they shared felt like belonging. 14

The little tree kangaroo still loved his own special branch, but now he loved it even more because he had someone to share it with. The cuscus would climb up and call, "Ready for an adventure?" And the tree kangaroo would answer, "Always!" Because with a friend beside him, the whole rainforest was a wonderful place to be.
