The Little Tamandua

🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:01

In the heart of a rainforest where the leaves stay green all year, a little tamandua with soft cream and tan fur and a dark stripe across his shoulders spends his days exploring. His sturdy claws help him dig and climb, and his long snout can sniff out hidden paths and secret doors that other animals miss. Carrying a small green leaf satchel with a notebook inside, he has become the best pathfinder in the forest.

One sunny morning he meets a playful squirrel monkey with golden-yellow fur, a red vine bracelet and a blue feather behind one ear. The monkey is looking for adventure, and together they follow the tamandua's nose through a wall of ferns to an old moss-covered stone door. Behind it lies a hidden rainforest library, its shelves stretching to the ceiling and sunbeams falling through holes in the roof. The two friends discover that the best books sit on the highest shelves: the tamandua can find the way but cannot reach them, while the monkey can climb but needs the tamandua's nose to find the path home.

This gentle story follows the pair as they work out how to carry the books back and share the stories with the other animals. Young readers learn about friendship, patience and cooperation, and about how different skills put together can create something wonderful. It is suited to children in the early primary years and to anyone reading aloud at bedtime.

A Chapter from the Book

The Little Tamandua - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In the heart of the rainforest, where the trees grew tall and the leaves stayed green all year, lived a little tamandua. He had soft cream and tan fur, with a dark brown stripe across his shoulders like a vest. His long snout twitched as he sniffed the warm, damp air. He carried a small green leaf satchel across his body, holding a tiny notebook for his explorations. 1

The tamandua loved to wander and explore. His sturdy claws helped him dig and climb, and his long furry tail curled upward as he walked. He was gentle and curious, and he had a special talent: he could sniff out hidden paths and secret doors. With his long snout close to the ground, he found trails that others missed. He was the best pathfinder in the rainforest. 2

One sunny morning, as he sniffed along a mossy log, he heard a rustle above. Down swung a squirrel monkey, all goldenyellow fur and a white face with a dark cap on his head. He wore a red vine bracelet on one wrist and a small blue feather behind one ear. 'Hello!' he chattered. 'I'm looking for adventure. Want to explore together?' The tamandua nodded, and they set off as new friends. 3

The squirrel monkey was playful and bold. He leaped from branch to branch, his long thin tail balancing him, and his tiny hands grabbed vines with ease. The tamandua followed more slowly, sniffing the ground. 'I smell something strange,' he said, his round dark eyes gleaming. 'Like old paper and dust.' The monkey tilted his head. 'Let's follow your nose!' he said, and they pushed deeper into the forest. 4

They came to a thick wall of ferns and vines. The tamandua sniffed carefully. 'There's a path here,' he said, and pushed through. Behind the ferns stood an old stone door, covered in moss. The squirrel monkey gasped. 'A secret door!' The tamandua sniffed again. 'There's a crack here,' he said, and with his sturdy claws, he gently pushed. The door creaked open. 5

Inside, they found a huge room filled with books! Shelves stretched high up to the ceiling, packed with colorful covers. Sunbeams danced through holes in the roof. 'It's a library!' whispered the squirrel monkey. 'A hidden rainforest library!' The tamandua's eyes grew wide. 'I've never seen so many books,' he said. 'How will we ever read them all?' 6

The tamandua sniffed the air. 'There are more rooms behind those shelves,' he said. He followed a scent to a small door hidden behind a curtain of vines. 'This way!' he called. The squirrel monkey bounded after him. They found a cozy nook with soft mossy cushions and a little table. 'This is perfect for reading,' said the tamandua, curling his tail around him. 7

But the best books were on the highest shelves. The tamandua tried to reach, but he was too short. 'I can climb!' said the squirrel monkey. He scampered up the shelf, his tiny hands and feet gripping the wood. He pulled down a big book with a golden cover. 'Here!' he called. 'This one looks exciting!' The tamandua smiled. 'You're a great climber,' he said. 8

They sat together and opened the book. It was full of stories about faraway places. The squirrel monkey read aloud, chattering excitedly. The tamandua listened, his long snout twitching with delight. 'We should share these stories with our friends,' he said. 'But how will we carry all these books?' The monkey thought. 'We can bring them one at a time,' he said. 'And we can take turns.' 9

So they made a plan. The tamandua would sniff out the safest path through the forest, and the squirrel monkey would climb to reach the books. They chose a stack of books and started back. The tamandua led the way, his nose close to the ground. The monkey followed, balancing the books on his head. 'This is fun!' he laughed. 'We make a good team!' 10

Back in the heart of the rainforest, their friends gathered around. The tamandua and the squirrel monkey took turns reading the stories aloud. The other animals listened, wideeyed. 'Read another!' they cried. The tamandua felt warm inside. He had never shared stories before. The squirrel monkey grinned. 'See?' he said. 'Teamwork makes everything more fun!' 11

From that day on, the two friends visited the hidden library often. The tamandua sniffed out new paths, and the squirrel monkey climbed to reach the highest books. They brought back stories to share with everyone. Their friendship grew stronger with each adventure. And they learned that different skills, when put together, create something wonderful. 12

One day, they found a book about tamanduas and squirrel monkeys. 'Look!' said the squirrel monkey. 'It says we are partners in the rainforest!' The tamandua smiled. 'We are,' he said. 'You climb, and I sniff. We help each other.' They sat together, reading and laughing, their tails curled close. The library felt like a second home. 13

Soon, other animals wanted to help. The tamandua taught them how to sniff out paths, and the squirrel monkey showed them how to climb safely. The library became a gathering place for all. 'We couldn't have done it without you,' said the tamandua. 'And I couldn't have done it without you,' said the squirrel monkey. They smiled, knowing they were stronger together.
