In a far corner of the Australian bush, a little numbat with reddish-brown fur, dark stripes and a long pointed snout moves into a new burrow. Everything around him is big and strange: tall gum trees sway, unfamiliar birds call from the branches, and every path looks the same. Missing his old home and afraid of getting lost, he sits by a log and wishes for a friend to show him around.
A bilby with long rabbit-like ears and a friendly smile hops by and offers to help. Together they take a safe route through the bush, hopping over logs, stepping around rocks and crossing a slippery creek on stones. The bilby points out landmarks, warns him about holes, and when the numbat stumbles or freezes at a rustle in the bushes, the bilby offers a paw and admits that he gets scared too sometimes. By the end of the day the numbat remembers the way back to his burrow and feels at home.
The story is a gentle tale about being new somewhere and the difference a kind friend can make. It shows young readers that fear and loneliness are normal, that asking for help is brave, and that friendship grows through small acts of guidance and encouragement. With its simple language and animal characters from the Australian bush, it suits early readers and adults reading aloud to children who are starting school, moving house or settling into a new place.

The Little Numbat - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL
In a far corner of the Australian bush, a little numbat moved into a new burrow. His fur was reddish-brown with dark stripes, and his long pointed snout twitched at every new sound. He had big dark eyes that looked around nervously. The bush was big and strange, and the numbat felt very small and lonely. He missed his old home and didn't know where anything was. 1
The numbat stepped outside and sniffed the air. Tall gum trees swayed, and strange birds called from the branches. He wanted to explore, but he didn't know which way to go. Every path looked the same, and he was afraid of getting lost. He sat by a log and sighed. "I wish I had a friend to show me around," he whispered. 2
Just then, a bilby hopped by. He had long rabbit-like ears, soft blue-grey fur, and a bright, friendly smile. "Hello! You must be new here," said the bilby. "I'm Bilby, and I love to explore. Would you like some help finding your way?" The numbat nodded shyly. His big dark eyes lit up with hope. He had never met a bilby before, but this one seemed kind. 3
Bilby said, "Follow me! I know a safe route through the bush." He led the numbat past a prickly bush and around a big rock. The numbat's striped fur bristled with excitement. "Watch out for that hole," Bilby warned. "We'll hop over logs and go around rocks. It's the safest way." The numbat felt a little braver with Bilby beside him. 4
They came to a fallen log blocking the path. "We can hop over it," said Bilby, and he jumped gracefully. The numbat tried, but his little legs weren't as long. He stumbled and almost fell. "Here, take my paw," said Bilby. Together they climbed over the log. The numbat smiled. "Thank you," he said. "You're a good friend." Bilby's white-tipped tail wiggled happily. 5
On the other side, they found a patch of soft moss. "This is a good place to rest," said Bilby. They sat down, and the numbat told Bilby about his old home. Bilby listened with his long ears twitching. "It's hard to be new," Bilby said. "But don't worry. I'll help you. The bush is full of friendly animals." The numbat felt a warm glow inside. 6
As they walked on, Bilby pointed out landmarks. "See that tall tree with the hollow? That's where the owls live. And that flat rock is a good place to sun yourself." The numbat tried to remember everything. His long snout sniffed at new smells, and his big eyes took in every detail. He was beginning to feel less lost. The bush didn't seem so big anymore. 7
Suddenly, they heard a rustle in the bushes. The numbat froze, his striped fur standing on end. "What's that?" he whispered. Bilby chuckled. "It's just a lizard. Look!" A small lizard scurried across the path. The numbat let out a breath. "I was scared," he admitted. "That's okay," said Bilby. "I get scared too, sometimes. But we're safe together." 8
They continued on, hopping over smaller logs and stepping around rocks. Bilby told silly jokes, and the numbat giggled. "Why did the kookaburra laugh?" asked Bilby. "I don't know," said the numbat. "Because the bush was full of funny bugs!" Bilby said, and they both laughed. The numbat's loneliness was fading with every step. He was having fun. 9
Soon they reached a small creek. "We need to cross here," said Bilby. "But the stones are slippery." The numbat looked at the water and felt nervous. "I'll go first and show you the safe spots," said Bilby. He hopped from stone to stone. "Now you try." The numbat followed carefully, and with Bilby's guidance, he made it across. "You did it!" cheered Bilby. 10
The numbat felt a surge of pride. "I couldn't have done it without you," he said. "That's what friends are for," said Bilby. "Now, let's find a safe route back to your burrow. We can explore more tomorrow." They turned around and headed back, pointing out the landmarks they had seen. The numbat realized he remembered the way. He felt happy and at home. 11
As they walked, the numbat said, "I was so lonely before. I thought I'd never feel welcome here. But you changed that." Bilby smiled. "Everyone needs a friend when they're new. I'm glad I found you." They shared a comfortable silence, listening to the bush sounds. The numbat knew he would never forget this day. He had found a true friend. 12
They reached the numbat's burrow just as the sun began to set. "Here we are," said Bilby. "Safe and sound." The numbat looked at his new friend. "Will you come back tomorrow?" he asked. "Of course!" said Bilby. "We can explore the other side of the bush. There's so much to see." They said goodnight, and the numbat curled up in his burrow, feeling warm and happy. 13
The next morning, the numbat woke up with a smile. He wasn't lonely anymore. He knew Bilby would come soon. He stepped outside and looked at the bush. It didn't seem big and strange now. It felt like home. The numbat realized that friendship had made all the difference. He was ready for new adventures with his best friend.
