The Lemur's Lost Drum - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In the heart of the rainforest, where the leaves glitter like emeralds, lived Lenny the lemur. He had soft grey fur, a white face, and a long, striped tail. Around his neck hung a red bead necklace. Lenny loved music more than anything. Every morning, he drummed on his favorite drum, a hollow log with tight vines. The rainforest music festival was only two days away, and Lenny practiced day and night. 1

Lenny's best friend was Cleo, a bright turquoise chameleon with golden eyes that swiveled every way. She wore a tiny yellow flower behind one eye and carried a small satchel of woven grass. Cleo was the best spotter in the rainforest. 'Your drum sounds wonderful,' she said, swaying her spiral tail. 'You'll be the star of the festival.' Lenny beamed. He couldn't wait to play for all the animals. 2

On the morning of the festival, Lenny reached for his drum. But the branch where he always kept it was empty! 'Oh no!' he cried, his amber eyes wide. 'My drum is gone!' He searched under leaves and behind vines, but there was no drum anywhere. Cleo hurried over. 'Don't worry,' she said calmly. 'We'll find it together. Let's look for clues.' Lenny nodded, his tail drooping. 3

Cleo swiveled her big golden eyes. 'Look!' she said. 'A bright red petal on the branch.' She pointed with a tiny clawed foot. Lenny saw it too. Then he spotted a smudge of yellow pollen nearby. 'Someone left a trail,' Cleo said. 'Let's follow it.' They hopped from branch to branch, following the colorful clues. Lenny's heart beat fast, but he felt better with Cleo beside him. 4

The clues led them past a banyan tree with roots like tangled ropes. 'Here's another clue!' Lenny called. A shiny blue feather was stuck in the bark. Cleo studied it closely. 'It's from a bird, but not from around here,' she said. 'Someone carried it this way.' They followed the feather's direction and found a trail of tiny footprints in the soft moss. 'Mouse lemur prints,' Cleo whispered. 'Small ones.' 5

As they followed the footprints, the rainforest grew quieter. Lenny clutched his necklace. 'What if we never find my drum?' he worried. Cleo patted his paw. 'We will,' she said. 'We're a team.' Just then, they heard a faint tapping sound. 'Listen!' Lenny said. 'That sounds like my drum!' They hurried toward the sound, their hearts pounding with hope. 6

The tapping grew louder. Behind a curtain of hanging vines, Lenny and Cleo peeked through. There, in a small clearing, a family of mouse lemurs was playing. The biggest one wore a necklace of pink flowers. A tiny one with an acorn cap was banging on Lenny's drum! 'My drum!' Lenny gasped. Cleo held him back. 'Let's watch first,' she said gently. 7

The mouse lemur with the acorn cap was Pip. He drummed with all his might, his huge eyes shining. His mother, Mimi, danced with a leaf shawl. 'This drum makes our show so happy!' Pip squeaked. Lenny felt a mix of anger and sadness. 'They borrowed it without asking,' he whispered. Cleo nodded. 'But they didn't mean any harm. Let's talk to them kindly.' 8

Lenny took a deep breath. He stepped into the clearing. 'Hello,' he said softly. 'That's my drum. I need it for the festival.' Mimi stopped dancing. 'Oh dear!' she said, her gentle face worried. 'We found it on the branch and thought it was lost. We only wanted to play. I'm so sorry.' Pip hid behind his mother, his acorn cap askew. Lenny's heart softened. 9

Cleo stepped forward. 'We understand,' she said. 'You wanted to make music too.' Mimi nodded. 'We love music,' she said. 'But we didn't mean to take your drum without asking.' Lenny looked at the little mouse lemurs. They seemed so sad. 'Maybe we can all play together,' he said. 'The festival is for everyone.' Pip's eyes grew wide with excitement. 'Really?' he squeaked. 10

Mimi smiled. 'That's a wonderful idea!' She handed the drum back to Lenny. 'We'll return it, and we'll help you practice.' Pip returned the drum with a shy grin. 'I'm sorry,' he said. 'I just wanted to drum like you.' Lenny smiled. 'You can drum with me,' he said. 'We'll make a band!' Cleo clapped her tiny feet. 'Teamwork makes everything better!' 11

They all practiced together. Pip tapped a steady beat, Mimi shook a rattle of seeds, and Lenny played his drum. Cleo kept time with her tail. The rainforest filled with music. Lenny forgot all about being worried. 'This is more fun than playing alone!' he said. Cleo nodded. 'See? Friends make every problem easier.' They marched toward the festival, ready to play. 12

The festival stage was a giant fern leaf. The whole rainforest had come to listen. Lenny and his friends played together. Pip's tiny paws flew over the drum, and Mimi's rattle added a soft swish. Cleo kept time with her spiral tail. The animals cheered and danced. Lenny's red bead necklace bounced as he played. He felt happier than ever before. 13

After the show, the animals clapped and stomped. 'That was the best music ever!' shouted a parrot. Lenny beamed. 'We couldn't have done it without each other,' he said. Mimi put a pink flower in Cleo's satchel. 'Thank you for being so kind,' she said. Pip gave Lenny a vine bracelet. 'Friends forever!' they all cheered. The rainforest echoed with laughter and music.
