In the wide, white Arctic, a little musk ox with a shaggy brown coat and a tan patch on his back spends his days watching the snow sparkle under the pale sun. One morning he meets Hare, a small white Arctic hare with black-tipped ears who can hop right over the deep snow. The two become friends, discovering that his short, strong legs and her quick hops make them a good pair.
Their friendship is tested when the sky turns gray and a winter storm begins to howl. Hare remembers hearing about a sheltered valley past the big ridge, and together they set out into the swirling snow. The musk ox plows a path and shelters Hare from the wind; Hare scouts ahead and, when the snow grows too deep, climbs onto his back to spot the valley from above. On a slippery slope, her quick eyes guide his careful steps until they reach a cozy nook beneath a big rock, where they keep each other warm through the long night.
When the storm ends, the little musk ox feels proud of what they accomplished. He realizes that being big and strong is not the only thing that matters, and Hare learns that being small does not mean being helpless. The story shows young readers how two very different friends can combine their strengths, look after one another and find their way through a frightening night. It is suited to children who enjoy gentle animal tales set in the natural world.

A Chapter from the Book
The Little Musk Ox - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL
In the wide, white Arctic, where the wind hums soft and low, lived a little musk ox. His shaggy brown coat kept him warm, and a lighter tan patch sat on his back like a saddle. His small curved horns were just beginning to grow, and his dark eyes were gentle and kind. He loved to watch the snow sparkle under the pale sun. 1
One morning, as the little musk ox nibbled frosty moss, a flash of white caught his eye. A small Arctic hare hopped close, her long ears with black tips standing tall. Her fur was pure white, and her fluffy tail bobbed as she twitched her pink nose. "Hello!" she said. "I'm Hare. The snow is deep, but I can hop right over it!" 2
The musk ox smiled. "I'm Musk Ox," he said. "My short legs are strong for pushing through snow." Hare laughed. "Then we make a good pair! You push, and I hop." They spent the day together, sharing stories and playing in the snow. The little musk ox felt happy. He had found a friend in the big, cold world. 3
As evening came, the sky turned a strange gray. The wind began to howl, and the snow fell faster and faster. "A winter storm is coming!" Hare cried, her ears flat with worry. "We need to find shelter, or the storm will blow us away!" The little musk ox looked around. The world was turning white and wild. 4
Hare stood on her hind legs and peered through the falling snow. "I remember hearing about a sheltered valley," she said. "It's past the big ridge, where the wind can't reach. I can scout ahead!" The musk ox nodded. "I'll follow your tracks and break the trail. Let's go!" They started off, side by side, into the swirling storm. 5
The snow was deep, and the wind pushed hard against them. The little musk ox lowered his head and plowed forward, his sturdy legs making a path. Hare hopped behind him, sheltered from the wind by his shaggy body. "You're so strong!" she called. "I'm glad you're with me," he replied. "You know the way." 6
After a while, Hare stopped. "The ridge is ahead," she said. "But the snow is too deep for me to see the valley. I need to climb higher." She leaped onto a snowdrift, but it crumbled, and she tumbled back. "I can't make it!" she cried. The musk ox gently nudged her. "Climb on my back. From there, you can see far." 7
Hare scrambled onto the musk ox's tan back patch. From up high, she looked and looked. "I see it!" she shouted. "A valley between two hills, with a big rock for shelter! But there's a steep slope before it." The musk ox took a deep breath. "Then we'll go down carefully. Hold on tight!" He started down the slope, step by step. 8
The slope was slippery, and the wind blew fierce. The musk ox slipped, but he caught himself. "Are you all right?" Hare asked. "Yes," he said. "But I can't see the path. Can you guide me?" Hare looked down. "A little left! Now straight! There's a snowdrift ahead!" With her quick eyes, she helped him find the way. 9
Finally, they reached the bottom of the slope. The valley opened before them, calm and quiet. The wind was softer here, blocked by the hills. "We made it!" Hare cheered. The musk ox smiled. "We made it together." They hurried toward the big rock, where a cozy nook waited, just big enough for two. 10
The storm howled outside, but inside the nook, it was still. The musk ox's thick coat made a warm cushion, and Hare snuggled close. "You were brave to come down that slope," she said. "And you were clever to guide me," he replied. "I couldn't have found this place without you." They watched the snow swirl, safe and warm. 11
As the night went on, the storm grew louder. Hare shivered. "Don't be scared," said the musk ox. "I'll keep you warm." He wrapped his shaggy body around her. Hare pressed her nose into his fur. "And I'll listen for when the storm stops," she said. "My ears are good at that." They stayed close, friends through the long, wild night. 12
In the morning, the wind died down. Hare peeked out. "The storm is over!" she cried. The world was fresh and white, sparkling in the sun. The musk ox stretched his short legs. "We did it," he said. "We found shelter and stayed safe." Hare hopped onto his back. "Because we helped each other!" 13
They spent the day exploring the valley, nibbling moss and playing in the snow. The little musk ox felt proud. He had been strong, but Hare had been quick and clever. "You know," he said, "I used to think being big and strong was the most important thing. But you showed me that being smart and quick matters just as much." 14
Hare smiled. "And you showed me that being small doesn't mean you can't be mighty. When we work as a team, we can do anything!" They looked at the big rock that had sheltered them. "This will be our special place," said Hare. "Whenever a storm comes, we'll come here together." They touched noses, happy and safe.
