A Chapter from the Book

The Little Mountain Goat - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

High on a rocky mountain, where clouds tickled the peaks, lived a little mountain goat with fluffy cream-white fur and tiny curved horns. Every morning, she trotted up the steep trails, her small black hooves clicking on the stones. She loved the cold wind and the wide sky. But sometimes, she wished for a friend to share it all. 1

One sunny day, as she nibbled on sweet grass, she heard a tiny sneeze. Behind a rock, a pika peeked out. He was small and round, with golden-brown fur and oversized round ears. A tiny acorn-cap satchel hung across his back. 'Hello,' said the goat. 'I'm Little Goat.' The pika twitched his whiskers. 'I'm Pika,' he said shyly. 2

Little Goat and Pika quickly became friends. Pika showed her secret paths between the rocks, squeezing through gaps too small for her. Little Goat carried Pika over big boulders on her sturdy back. They laughed and played until the sun dipped low. 'You're so brave,' said Pika. 'And you're so clever,' said Little Goat. They made a great team. 3

One afternoon, dark clouds rolled across the sky. The wind began to howl, and fat raindrops splashed on the rocks. 'A storm is coming!' cried Pika, his ears flat with worry. 'We need to find shelter!' Little Goat looked around. 'Follow me!' she shouted over the wind. 'I know a trail!' But the rain made the rocks slippery and cold. 4

Little Goat led the way up a steep slope, her strong legs gripping the wet stones. Pika clung to her back, his tiny paws holding tight. 'Careful!' he squeaked as the wind pushed them. 'The path is too narrow!' Little Goat steadied herself. 'Hold on!' she called. She climbed slowly, one hoof at a time, while the storm raged around them. 5

The wind grew fiercer. Rain stung their eyes. Little Goat's hooves slipped on a mossy rock, and she wobbled. 'I can't see!' she bleated. Pika's bright black eyes scanned the path. 'Turn left!' he shouted. 'There's a crevice we can squeeze through!' Little Goat followed his voice, and they found a narrow gap between two big rocks. 6

Pika wriggled into the crevice first, his plump body fitting easily. 'It's safe here!' he called. But Little Goat was too big. 'I can't fit!' she cried. Pika looked around. 'Wait! There's a wider path behind this rock. I'll guide you!' He popped out and scampered ahead, his tiny tail hidden. Little Goat followed, trusting her friend. 7

They pushed on through the storm. Pika found the safest routes, hopping from stone to stone. Little Goat climbed the steep parts, carrying Pika when the path was too rough. 'You're doing great!' Pika cheered. 'So are you!' Little Goat panted. The wind howled, but their teamwork kept them going. They were a perfect pair. 8

Suddenly, the ground sloped downward. 'Look!' Pika pointed. Below them, a green valley opened up, sheltered by tall cliffs. 'We made it!' Little Goat bleated. They hurried down the slope, the storm growing quieter behind them. The rain softened to a gentle drizzle. They had found a safe place at last. 9

In the valley, the grass was soft and the air was warm. A small stream gurgled nearby. 'This is perfect!' Pika sighed, shaking the water from his fur. Little Goat found a dry cave under a big rock. 'We can rest here,' she said. They curled up together, listening to the rain tap softly on the stone. 10

As they rested, Little Goat thought about their journey. 'You saved us,' she said to Pika. 'Your tiny eyes found the safe paths.' Pika smiled. 'And your strong legs carried us over the rocks.' They looked at each other and laughed. 'We're different,' said Little Goat, 'but we fit together perfectly.' Pika nodded. 'Like a puzzle.' 11

The storm passed, and the sun peeked through the clouds. A rainbow stretched across the sky. 'Look!' Pika squeaked, pointing with his tiny paw. Little Goat stepped out of the cave and gasped. The valley sparkled with raindrops, and the rainbow made everything glow. 'It's beautiful,' she whispered. They sat side by side, watching the colors shine. 12

From that day on, Little Goat and Pika stayed in the valley. They built a cozy home under the big rock. Pika decorated it with soft moss and shiny pebbles from the stream. Little Goat kept watch from a high ledge. They were never lonely again. And whenever a storm came, they knew they could face it together. 13

Little Goat learned that being different was special. Her strong legs and Pika's sharp eyes made them a perfect team. They helped each other every day, and their friendship grew stronger. 'I'm glad we're not the same,' said Little Goat. 'Me too,' said Pika. 'Different is better.' And they smiled, because they knew it was true. 14

One evening, as the sun set behind the mountains, Little Goat and Pika sat on a warm rock. 'Remember the storm?' asked Pika. Little Goat nodded. 'We were scared,' she said. 'But we worked together.' Pika leaned against her fluffy fur. 'That's what friends do,' he said. 'They help each other, no matter how different they are.' 15

And so, high on the mountain, in a cozy valley, lived a little mountain goat and a tiny pika. They were the best of friends, and they knew that together, they could do anything. Because being different is special, and working as a team makes every adventure possible. The end.
