The Little Chinchilla

The Little Chinchilla

Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

High in the mountains, where clouds tickle the rooftops, a little chinchilla arrives in a village of winding paths and tiny doors, wearing a blue polka-dot scarf and carrying a woven satchel. Her silver-grey fur is fluffed by the breeze and her big black eyes sparkle with hope: she is looking for a friend. She soon meets a degu in a green vest and a tool belt full of wooden pegs, who is building a surprise behind the village — a climbing playground for everyone.

Together the two animals set to work, placing pegs, tying ropes, carrying twigs and digging a tunnel. The degu teaches the chinchilla how to balance on a swaying bridge, and she shows him how to tuck into a fluffy ball and roll under a tunnel. The Village Elder Mouse visits them, reminding the pair that sharing makes things even better. But when the bridge wobbles, the ladder leans and the tunnel's roof sags, the chinchilla and the degu must decide whether to give up or to ask for help.

The story follows their search for stronger materials and the rebuilding of the playground, and it shows how a shy rabbit, a squirrel and a chipmunk join in once the work is shared. Young readers learn about cooperation, patience, listening to each other's ideas and the courage to ask for help when something goes wrong. The gentle animal characters and the mountain village setting make this a warm read-aloud tale for children in the early primary years, and for anyone who enjoys stories about making friends through working together.

The Little Chinchilla - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

High in the mountains, where clouds tickled the rooftops, there was a village full of winding paths and tiny doors. The little chinchilla arrived with a blue polka-dot scarf and a woven satchel, her silver-grey fur fluffed by the mountain breeze. Her big black eyes sparkled as she looked around. "What a magical place!" she whispered. She hoped to find a friend. 1

As she wandered, she met a degu in a green vest and a tool belt full of wooden pegs. The degu's brown fur shone, and his thin tail had a tuft at the tip. "Hello!" said the degu. "I'm building a surprise." The chinchilla's tiny pink nose twitched with curiosity. "Can I help?" she asked. The degu smiled. "Maybe! But first, let's see what you can do." 2

The degu led her to a little clearing behind the village. "This will be a climbing playground for everyone," he said. "But it's not easy." The chinchilla looked at the pile of sticks, ropes, and pegs. "We can do it together!" she said. The degu tilted his head. "You think so?" "I know so!" she cheered, and her fluffy tail curled with excitement. 3

They started to build. The degu showed her how to place pegs and tie ropes. "Your paws are small and gentle," he said. "Perfect for the tiny bridges." The chinchilla beamed. She had never built anything before. "And your tool belt is amazing!" she said. The degu laughed. "My grandpa gave it to me. He said every degu needs a good tool belt." 4

The chinchilla learned that degus love to climb and jump. She was a good climber too, but she liked to go slowly. "Why do you go so fast?" she asked. The degu shrugged. "I just can't wait!" He showed her how to balance on a swaying bridge. She showed him how to tuck into a fluffy ball and roll under a tunnel. "That's clever!" he said. 5

The Village Elder Mouse came by, her purple shawl wrapped tight and her acorn-topped stick tapping softly. She wore round glasses that made her kind eyes look huge. "What a wonderful playground!" she said. "Remember, little ones, sharing makes it even better." The chinchilla nodded. "We'll make it for everyone!" The degu added, "With bridges and ladders and tunnels!" 6

They worked all day. The chinchilla carried twigs in her satchel. The degu hammered pegs with a tiny mallet. They made a wobbly bridge between two rocks. They built a ladder from a fallen branch. They dug a tunnel through a soft mound of earth. "It's almost done!" said the degu. "But something feels loose," said the chinchilla, wiggling her nose. 7

Just as they finished, the bridge began to wobble. The ladder leaned to one side. The tunnel's roof sagged. "Oh no!" cried the chinchilla. "It's falling apart!" The degu ran to check. "The pegs are too small for this soft ground," he said. "We need bigger ones. But I don't have any." The chinchilla's ears drooped. "What do we do?" 8

The chinchilla thought hard. "We can find bigger pegs together," she said. "And we can ask for help." The degu looked unsure. "But it's our playground." "Exactly!" she said. "And friends help friends." She took his paw. "Come on!" They searched the village and found thick sticks and smooth stones. The Village Elder Mouse gave them a ball of strong string. 9

They rebuilt the bridge with bigger pegs. The chinchilla held the sticks while the degu hammered. "Teamwork!" she cheered. They fixed the ladder and propped up the tunnel. The degu wiped his brow. "You were right," he said. "Asking for help was a good idea." The chinchilla smiled. "And working together is fun!" They stepped back to look at their playground. It stood strong and proud. 10

The Little Village Rabbit hopped by, her red neckerchief flapping and her long ears twitching. "Is that a climbing playground?" she asked shyly. "Can I try?" The chinchilla nodded. "Of course!" The rabbit bounced onto the bridge, her fluffy white tail wiggling. She climbed the ladder and peeked through the tunnel. "Wheee!" she squealed. "This is the best!" 11

The rabbit's happy climbing brought more animals. A squirrel tried the bridge. A chipmunk raced through the tunnel. The Village Elder Mouse sat on a stone, her glasses glinting. "See?" she said. "When you share, everyone wins." The chinchilla watched her new friends play. She felt warm inside. The degu nudged her. "We did it," he said. "Together." She nodded. "Friends can be found in surprising places." 12

As the sun began to set, the playground glowed golden. The chinchilla and the degu sat on a rock, watching the animals climb and laugh. "Thank you for being my friend," said the chinchilla. The degu smiled. "Thank you for understanding me." They shared a tiny acorn snack. The chinchilla's blue scarf fluttered in the breeze. "Tomorrow we can add a slide!" she said. The degu's eyes lit up. "Deal!" 13

The Village Elder Mouse tapped her stick. "Time to go home, little ones," she said. "But remember: a kind word and a helping hand build the best adventures." The animals waved goodnight. The chinchilla and the degu walked home under the stars. "Same time tomorrow?" asked the degu. "Always," said the chinchilla. They hugged, and her fluffy tail curled around his thin one.
