🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:05

On a bright Saturday morning, Ben slips on his red sneakers and visits the animal sanctuary at the edge of town, where he has waited all week to meet the animals up close. Caretaker Maya welcomes him and introduces him to Clover, a rescued goat with a shaggy white-and-grey coat and amber eyes who loves to climb but has only one low stump in her pen. Watching Clover try to scale a fence post, Ben realizes she needs more to explore and suggests building her some climbing platforms.

With caretaker Sam in the tool shed, Ben learns to measure wood, mark boards with a pencil, and hammer nails safely. His first nail bends sideways, but Sam and Maya encourage him, and Ben tries again until he gets it right. Together they build three platforms of different heights joined by a gentle ramp, using soft wood so Clover's hooves will not slip. When Clover hops up and begins leaping from platform to platform, Ben sees how enrichment helps an animal feel safe, curious, and confident.

Later, Ben notices Clover looking at a gap between two platforms and realizes she wants to go higher. He measures the space, Sam cuts a small step, and Clover finds her balance on it. The story shows young readers how careful observation, patience, and teamwork can improve an animal's life, and it gently teaches that caring for animals means paying attention to what they need.

The Boy and the Rescue Goat - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

On a bright Saturday morning, Ben slipped on his red sneakers and grabbed his canvas tool belt. His mom drove him to the animal sanctuary at the edge of town. Ben had waited all week for this visit. He loved animals more than anything, and today he would finally meet them up close. The gate creaked open, and a warm, grassy smell floated out. 1

Caretaker Maya met Ben at the gate with a smile. She wore an olive work shirt and carried a clipboard under her arm. 'Welcome, Ben,' she said. 'We have sheep, ducks, rabbits, and one very special goat.' Ben's eyes grew wide. He followed Maya down a gravel path lined with sunflowers. The sanctuary hummed with happy animal sounds. 2

In a sunny pen, a goat with a shaggy white-and-grey coat stood on a stump. Her floppy ears wiggled, and her amber eyes sparkled. 'This is Clover,' Maya said. 'She was rescued last spring.' Clover gave a happy bleat and bounced off the stump. Ben laughed. 'She's like a fuzzy mountain climber!' he said. Clover trotted over and sniffed his tool belt. 3

Maya explained that Clover loved to climb everything, but the pen had only one low stump. 'She gets bored and restless,' Maya said. 'Goats need things to jump on and explore. It keeps them healthy and happy.' Ben watched Clover try to climb a fence post. His brown eyes lit up. 'What if we build her some climbing platforms?' he asked. 4

Maya nodded. 'That's a wonderful idea. Let's talk to Sam.' They found Caretaker Sam in the tool shed, wearing his navy cap and red flannel shirt. A measuring tape hung from his belt. 'Climbing platforms for a goat?' Sam grinned. 'I've built plenty of those. Let's make them safe and sturdy.' Ben bounced on his toes. 'Can I help?' 'Absolutely,' Sam said. 5

Sam showed Ben how to measure wood with his wooden measuring stick. 'Always measure twice and cut once,' Sam said, handing Ben a pencil. Ben carefully marked each board. Maya brought smooth planks and strong nails. 'We'll use soft wood so Clover's hooves won't slip,' she explained. Ben measured, Sam sawed, and Maya sanded every edge until it was smooth. 6

They built three platforms of different heights. Sam showed Ben how to hammer nails safely, holding them straight and tapping gently. Ben's first nail bent sideways, and he sighed. 'That's okay,' Sam laughed. 'Every builder bends a few.' Ben tried again and hit it perfectly. 'I did it!' he cheered. Maya gave him a thumbs-up from across the pen. 7

When the platforms were ready, they carried them into Clover's pen. Clover watched with her head tilted, curious. Ben placed the lowest platform near her stump. Clover sniffed it, then leaped up in one smooth hop. 'She loves it!' Ben cried. Clover balanced on the platform and looked around proudly, her green collar jingling. Maya smiled. 'That's one happy goat.' 8

Next, they set up a medium platform and a tall one, joined by a gentle ramp. Clover climbed the ramp slowly at first, then faster. She jumped from one platform to another, her floppy ears flying. Ben laughed and clapped. 'Look at her go!' Sam cheered. Clover did a little twist in the air and landed perfectly on the tallest platform. 9

Clover explored every corner of her new climbing course. She balanced on the ramp, stretched her neck, and peered down at Ben. Then she bounced from platform to platform like a fuzzy acrobat. Ben watched with delight. 'She's so brave,' he said. Maya nodded. 'Enrichment helps animals feel safe and curious. Clover is finding her confidence.' 10

After lunch, Ben noticed Clover had stopped jumping. She stood by the fence, looking at a gap between two platforms. 'She wants to go higher,' Ben said. 'But it's too far.' Maya nodded. 'Good noticing. Let's add a small step there.' Ben measured the gap with his stick, and Sam cut a little step. They attached it securely. Clover watched every move. 11

When the step was ready, Ben held his breath. Clover sniffed the new piece, then leaped up. She wobbled for a moment. 'Steady,' Ben whispered. Clover found her balance and stood tall, her amber eyes shining. 'She did it!' Ben shouted. Maya clapped her gloved hands. 'You saw what she needed, Ben. That's real care.' Clover bleated happily. 12

From that day on, Ben visited the sanctuary every Saturday. Clover grew stronger and happier, jumping and balancing with ease. Each week, Ben brought new ideas: a smooth log to balance on, a gentle ramp, a shady resting spot. Maya and Sam taught him more about animal care. 'Enrichment keeps animals' minds and bodies busy,' Maya said. Ben nodded, proud to help. 13

One morning, Maya showed Ben a chart of Clover's health. 'She's healthier than ever,' Maya said. 'Your climbing platforms made a big difference.' Ben smiled so wide his freckles stretched. Clover trotted over and nuzzled his hand. 'She's my friend,' Ben said softly. Sam grinned. 'And you're her favorite builder.' Clover bleated in agreement. 14

Ben learned that kindness isn't just giving food or water. It's noticing what an animal needs to feel happy and curious. With care and teamwork, he helped Clover climb, balance, and explore. 'Even a kid can make a real difference,' Maya said. Ben looked at Clover on her tallest platform, proud and strong. 'I'll keep helping,' he promised.
