A Chapter from the Book

The Tapir and the Toucan - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In the heart of the rainforest, where leaves dripped like green rain, lived Tessa the tapir. She was a sturdy, gentle animal, about the size of a pony, with a soft, velvety grey-brown hide and a creamy pale patch along her back. Tessa knew every safe trail in the forest. She wore a simple woven vine band around one ankle, a gift from a friend. 1

High in the branches lived Tito the toucan. He was small and light, with black feathers, a bright white chest, and a huge curved beak of yellow and orange. A vivid blue ring circled each eye, and he wore a tiny red seed necklace. Tito could spot ripe fruit from far above. Tessa and Tito were best friends, and they helped each other every day. 2

The rainforest buzzed with life. Tessa led the ground animals along safe paths, while Tito called out directions from the sky. "Fruit ahead on the left!" he would squawk. Tessa would nod and guide the others. They made a perfect team. All the animals trusted them, because Tessa and Tito always found the best food and the safest ways. 3

One day, dark clouds rolled in. The wind howled, and the rain poured down. Tessa and Tito huddled under a big leaf. The storm shook the trees and bent the branches. When it finally passed, the forest looked different. Leaves and branches lay everywhere. The animals peeked out, worried. Would they still find food? 4

Tessa and Tito set off to check their favorite path. It was the easiest trail to the fruit grove, and everyone used it. But when they got there, they found a big surprise. A huge tree had fallen across the path! Branches and leaves blocked the way. "Oh no," said Tessa. "This path is broken. We need to find another way." 5

Tito flew up to get a better look. He circled above the fallen tree, his bright wings catching the sun. "The old path is completely blocked!" he called down. "But I can see other trails from here." Tessa looked at her friend. "We need to find a new way to the feeding area," she said. "Will you help me?" Tito nodded. "Always!" 6

Tessa knew many trails, but the storm had changed things. Some paths might be muddy or blocked. "I'll follow the ground," she said. "You look from above. Together we can find a safe route." Tito agreed. He flew ahead, watching for danger, while Tessa tested the ground with her sturdy legs. They made a good team. 7

Tito soared high, his sharp eyes scanning the forest. "There's a clear trail to the right!" he called. Tessa followed, her flexible snout sniffing the air. But when they reached the trail, it was muddy and slippery. "Too risky for the little ones," Tessa said. "Let's try another." They kept searching, step by step and flight by flight. 8

Tito flew higher and spotted a small group of animals waiting near the broken path. "The neighbors are worried," he told Tessa. "They don't know which way to go." Tessa nodded. "We'll lead them. But first we must find a safe route." She looked at Tito. "Can you check the fruit trees? We need to know where the food is." 9

Tito flew off and soon returned. "I see ripe fruit trees beyond the hill!" he chirped. "But the path there is new. I can guide you from above." Tessa smiled. "And I'll find the safest way on the ground. Let's go!" They hurried back to the waiting animals. "Follow us!" called Tessa. "We'll take you to a new feeding area." 10

Tessa led the way, her sturdy legs steady on the uneven ground. Tito flew overhead, calling out directions. "Turn left at the big rock!" he squawked. "Watch out for the muddy patch!" The animals followed, trusting their two friends. Tessa tested each step, and Tito scanned for fruit. Together, they made a perfect team. 11

The trail was tricky, but Tessa and Tito worked together. Tito spotted a fallen branch ahead. "Careful!" he warned. Tessa led the animals around it safely. Then Tito saw a stream. "The water is low; we can cross!" he called. Tessa waded in first, showing it was safe. The others followed, one by one, until everyone was across. 12

Finally, they reached the new feeding area. Tito flew to the top of a tall tree. "Lots of fruit here!" he called. "Juicy figs and berries!" The animals cheered. Tessa smiled as they ate. "We couldn't have found this without you, Tito," she said. "And I couldn't have led them safely without you, Tessa," he replied. "Friends help each other in different ways." 13

The animals ate until they were full. "Thank you, Tessa and Tito!" they said. "You saved the day!" Tessa and Tito looked at each other and smiled. They had used their special skills together, and everyone had plenty of food. The rainforest friends celebrated with happy chirps and snorts. It was a good day in the forest. 14

From that day on, Tessa and Tito were known as the best team in the rainforest. Tessa followed the trails on the ground, and Tito looked for fruit from the sky. They guided their neighbors to new feeding areas whenever the old paths were damaged. And they always remembered: friends can help each other in different ways.
