The Puffin's Secret Island

Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

Pip the puffin loves exploring the wide blue sea, and one misty morning he spots a tiny island on the horizon. Curious, he flies over and meets Gilda the guillemot, a slender bird with a sea-glass ribbon on her leg. Together they discover that the island's quiet cliffs have no nests, and they dream of making it a safe sanctuary for seabirds. But they know they can't do it alone.

Pip and Gilda gather the seabirds and propose their plan. The birds are curious but worried: is the island truly safe? A razorbill points out that strong winds could roll eggs off the ledges, so the birds work together to build safe nesting walls from stones, twigs, and moss. When a flock of gulls challenges them, Pip and Gilda show bravery and kindness, promising to share the sea and respect the gulls' fishing spot. Through teamwork and determination, the seabirds create a thriving colony.

The Puffin's Secret Island Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

Pip the puffin lived on the wide blue sea, where the wind tasted salty and the waves rolled like gentle hills. With his round black-and-white body and bright orange beak, he loved to explore. One morning, a new shape appeared on the horizon —a tiny island wrapped in mist. "I wonder what's over there," Pip said, and his dark eyes sparkled with curiosity. 1

Pip flapped his small wings and flew toward the island. Below him, the water glittered. On a rocky ledge, a slender bird with a long pointed beak watched him. It was Gilda the guillemot, wearing a tiny sea-glass blue ribbon on one leg. "Hello," she called. "Are you lost?" Pip landed beside her. "No," he said. "I'm exploring!" 2

Gilda smiled. "Then I'll come with you," she said. "I know these cliffs well." She led Pip along the island's edge. The cliffs were quiet and tall, and soft moss grew in the cracks. "It's beautiful here," Pip whispered. "And so peaceful," Gilda agreed. "But look—there are no nests on these ledges. The seabirds need a safe place to raise their chicks." 3

Pip and Gilda climbed higher. From the top of the cliff, they saw a flock of seabirds circling and calling. "This could be a sanctuary," Pip said. "A place where every seabird can rest and raise chicks safely." Gilda nodded. "But we can't do it alone," she said. "We need to ask the others for help." 4

They flew down to the shore, where seabirds gathered on the rocks. Pip puffed out his chest. "Friends," he called, "we found a quiet cliff where we could make a safe home!" The seabirds looked up. Some were curious. Some were worried. "Is it truly safe?" asked a small tern. "We'll make it safe together," Gilda said calmly. 5

The seabirds followed Pip and Gilda to the quiet cliffs. They saw the cozy cracks and the soft moss. "It's perfect!" chirped a kittiwake. But then a razorbill spoke up. "The wind is strong here. Our eggs could roll off the ledge." Gilda studied the cliff. "You're right," she said. "We need to build safe nesting ledges." 6

Pip opened his woven grass satchel and pulled out small stones. "We can stack these to make walls," he said. The seabirds worked together. Some carried twigs. Some carried moss. Some smoothed the ledges with their beaks. Gilda showed them how to tuck the stones so the wind couldn't blow them down. "Slow and steady," she said. 7

As they worked, a flock of gulls swooped low, squawking loudly. "This is our fishing spot!" they cried. "Go away!" The smaller seabirds huddled together. Pip stepped forward bravely. "There's room for everyone," he said. "We can share the sea." Gilda nodded. "We only want a safe place to nest. We won't harm your fishing." 8

The gulls grumbled, but they listened. "We'll stay on our side of the island," said their leader. "But if you bother us, we'll return." Pip thanked them. "We'll respect your space," he promised. The gulls flew off, and the seabirds breathed a sigh of relief. "That was brave," Gilda said. "And kind," Pip replied. "Kindness works better than shouting." 9

Days passed, and the nesting ledges grew strong. The seabirds laid their eggs and took turns keeping them warm. Pip and Gilda watched over the colony. One evening, a storm blew in. Rain lashed the cliffs, and wind howled. The seabirds held tight to their nests. "Stay close!" Gilda called. "The ledges will hold!" Pip checked each nest, making sure no egg was left uncovered. 10

When the storm passed, the island sparkled in the morning sun. Every nest was safe. Chicks peeped from under their parents' wings. "We did it!" Pip cheered. The seabirds gathered around. "You two showed us how to work together," said the tern. "And how to share," added the razorbill. "And how to be brave," said a tiny chick. Pip and Gilda felt proud. 11

From that day on, the island was a peaceful sanctuary. Seabirds came from far and wide to rest and raise their chicks. Pip and Gilda made a promise: they would always protect this special place. They taught the young birds to care for the cliffs and the sea. "Wonderful discoveries should be protected," Pip said. "And shared," Gilda added with a smile. 12

The island became known as the Secret Island, because only the seabirds knew how to find it. But it wasn't a secret to be hidden—it was a secret to be cherished. Pip and Gilda watched the sun set over the water, the sky glowing pink and gold. "We did something good," Pip said softly. "We made a home," Gilda replied. 13

Now the little island is a happy, safe place for seabirds. Every spring, new chicks hatch and learn to fly. Pip and Gilda still explore, but they always return to their sanctuary. The gulls keep their promise, and the seabirds share the sea. It's a place of kindness and courage, where every bird can rest and raise chicks safely. 14

Pip and Gilda sit on their favorite ledge, watching the waves. "Do you remember when we first found this island?" Pip asks. Gilda nods. "It was quiet and empty," she says. "Now it's full of life." Pip's orange beak glints in the sun. "We learned something important," he says. "What's that?" Gilda asks. "That wonderful discoveries should be protected," Pip says.
