The Little Tree Pipit - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL
In a bright and sunny meadow, where the grass swayed like waves and the sky stretched wide and blue, lived a little tree pipit. He was a small songbird with a warm brown back, soft streaks, and a creamy pale chest dotted with faint spots. His bright dark eyes twinkled as he hopped from stem to stem on delicate pinkish legs. Every morning he sang a cheerful tune that made the whole meadow wake up smiling. 1
The pipit loved his meadow home. He spent his days fluttering over the wildflowers, catching tiny insects, and sipping dew from the leaves. With his small rounded wings, he darted quickly through the air, light as a feather. The other meadow creatures knew him by his happy song. He was brave and loyal, and he always kept a watchful eye on his grassy kingdom. 2
One warm spring day, the pipit decided to build a cozy nest right in the tall grass. He gathered soft dry stems, bits of moss, and fluffy seeds. He wove them together into a snug little cup, hidden among the green blades. When he finished, he sat in his new home and sang a proud, trilling song. The meadow seemed to listen, and the breeze carried his tune far and wide. 3
As the pipit sang, a rustling sound came from below. Out of a small tunnel popped a plump meadow vole with soft chestnut brown fur and a lighter grey belly. His tiny dark eyes blinked in the sunlight, and his short whiskers twitched. He had small rounded ears and sturdy little digging paws. 'Hello up there!' the vole called. 'Your song is lovely. I'm new to this part of the meadow.' 4
The pipit fluttered down to a low stem. 'Welcome! I'm the tree pipit, and this is my nest,' he chirped. The vole smiled a gentle, friendly smile. 'I'm a meadow vole. I dig tunnels to keep safe,' he said. 'Would you like to be friends?' The pipit nodded eagerly. 'Yes! Friends make a meadow even happier.' And from that moment on, they were the best of friends. 5
Each day, the two friends shared adventures. The pipit showed the vole the best spots for juicy seeds, and the vole showed the pipit his secret underground paths. The vole was calm and hardworking, always improving his tunnels with his sturdy paws. The pipit was cheerful and brave, always singing to warn of any change in the weather. Together, they made a perfect team, and the meadow felt like a wonderful home. 6
One afternoon, the sky grew dark and a big wind began to blow. It swooshed across the meadow, bending the tall grass and tossing leaves into the air. The pipit's cozy nest wobbled dangerously. 'Oh no!' chirped the pipit. 'The wind might blow my nest away!' The vole scurried over. 'Don't worry,' he said. 'I can help. My tunnels can shelter us, and I can anchor the nest with soft earth.' 7
The vole dug quickly with his sturdy little paws, making a snug hollow beneath the nest. He packed the earth gently around the nest's base so it held firm. The pipit fluttered above, using his small rounded wings to steady the grass stems. 'Hold on!' he sang. The wind howled, but the nest stayed put. When the gust passed, the pipit sighed with relief. 'Thank you, friend,' he said. 'Your digging saved my home.' 8
But the wind had brought more than just a breeze. It carried the scent of hungry animals. A weasel and a hawk were nearby, looking for easy meals. The meadow creatures grew frightened. The pipit's bright eyes spotted them first. 'I must warn everyone!' he said. He opened his tiny pointed beak and sang a loud, clear warning song. The vole listened and knew just what to do. 9
'Follow me!' called the vole. He led the rabbits, mice, and other small animals to his safest tunnels. The pipit kept singing from a high stem, his voice ringing across the meadow. The weasel and hawk heard the alarm and saw the meadow ready. They turned away, finding no easy meal. The pipit's song had protected them all, and the vole's tunnels kept everyone safe and hidden. 10
When the danger passed, the animals crept out. They cheered for the pipit and the vole. 'You saved us!' they cried. The pipit and the vole looked at each other and smiled. 'We did it together,' said the pipit. 'I sang the warning, and you dug the safe holes.' The vole nodded. 'And everyone else listened and helped. That's what friends do.' The meadow buzzed with happy chatter once more. 11
From that day on, the pipit and the vole were known as the meadow's best team. They repaired the nest together, weaving in new grass and packing the earth. The pipit sang while the vole dug, and their friendship grew even stronger. Other animals came to help, bringing soft moss and seeds. The nest became the coziest spot in the meadow, and everyone felt safe and happy. 12
The big wind never returned, but the friends stayed ready. The vole dug extra tunnels, and the pipit practiced his warning song. They knew that working together made them strong. Sometimes, when the sun set and the meadow glowed golden, the pipit would sing a gentle lullaby, and the vole would listen from his burrow. Their friendship was a treasure, and the meadow was a peaceful, joyful place.
