🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:52

In a bright green forest where the leaves sparkle like emeralds, a little sifaka spends his days leaping from branch to branch, spinning in the air and calling out for everyone to watch him dance. With his silky white fur, dark brown cap, amber-gold eyes and long springy legs, the forest is his stage. One sunny day he lands beside a tiny chameleon who sits very still, his turquoise skin shifting to warm orange and yellow, his swiveling eyes taking in the world and his spiral tail curled like a snail shell. The sifaka cannot understand why anyone would choose to stay still instead of dance.

Yet the two become friends, and each begins to teach the other what he knows. The sifaka shows the chameleon how to sway, shifting his weight and letting his tail curl and uncurl in a gentle rhythm, while the chameleon shows the sifaka how to be still and notice the butterfly landing on a flower and the leaf trembling in the breeze. Together they plan a forest dance where frogs, birds, butterflies and other lemurs can all show their own special moves, decorating the branches with leaves and flowers and marking out a circle of seeds on the forest floor.

The story follows these two friends as they prepare for the celebration and discover that speed and slowness, leaping and stillness, are simply different ways of dancing. Young children and the adults reading with them will find a gentle lesson about friendship, mutual respect and noticing the quiet wonders of the natural world, told through the warm partnership of two very different animals.

The Little Sifaka - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In a bright green forest, where the leaves sparkled like emeralds, lived a little sifaka. He had silky white fur with a dark brown cap on his head, round amber-gold eyes, and long springy legs. Every morning, he leaped from branch to branch, his curly tail swirling behind him. "Watch me dance!" he cried, spinning in the air. The forest was his stage, and he loved to move. 1

One sunny day, the little sifaka landed on a branch and saw something new. A tiny chameleon sat very still, his turquoise green skin shifting to warm orange and yellow. His big swiveling eyes looked this way and that, and his spiral tail curled like a snail shell. "Hello!" said the sifaka. "Why don't you dance?" The chameleon smiled slowly. "I like to watch," he said softly. 2

The sifaka tilted his head. "But dancing is so much fun!" He leaped and twirled, his white fur fluffing in the breeze. The chameleon watched, his eyes turning to follow every jump. "You are very fast," he said. "I am very slow." The sifaka stopped and looked at the chameleon's tiny hands and curled tail. "That's okay," he said. "Maybe we can be friends anyway." 3

The chameleon nodded. "I would like that." He slowly reached out a hand, and the sifaka gently took it. "I can show you how to sway," said the sifaka. "And I can show you how to be still and watch," said the chameleon. So they began to spend every day together, learning from each other in the bright green forest. 4

The sifaka taught the chameleon to sway. He showed him how to shift his weight from one foot to the other, and how to let his tail curl and uncurl in a gentle rhythm. The chameleon tried, but his movements were slow and careful. "Like this?" he asked, swaying just a little. "Yes!" cheered the sifaka. "You are doing it!" The chameleon's skin glowed with happy colors. 5

Then the chameleon taught the sifaka to be still. "Watch," he said. "See how the butterfly lands on the flower? See how the leaf trembles in the breeze?" The sifaka sat very still, his amber eyes wide. He had never noticed these tiny, quiet things before. "Being still is like a dance too," said the chameleon. The sifaka smiled. "It is!" he whispered. 6

One day, the sifaka had a big idea. "Let's plan a forest dance!" he said. "Everyone can come and show their own special moves." The chameleon's eyes swiveled with excitement. "I can invite the frogs and the birds," he said. "And the butterflies and the other lemurs!" They hopped and swayed with joy, dreaming of a dance where everyone would be welcome. 7

They began to prepare. The sifaka leaped high to hang colorful leaves and flowers from the branches. The chameleon slowly climbed up and down, placing tiny seeds in a circle on the forest floor. "This will be the dance floor," he said. "And I will change colors to make it sparkle!" The sifaka clapped his hands. "Perfect!" he cried. "Everyone will love it." 8

Word spread through the forest. The frogs croaked with excitement, the birds chirped, and the butterflies fluttered. "A dance! A dance!" they sang. The other lemurs swung from tree to tree, eager to join. The sifaka and the chameleon practiced their moves together every day, getting ready for the big celebration. 9

Finally, the day of the forest dance arrived. The sun shone bright and warm. The sifaka stood on a mossy log and called out, "Welcome, everyone! Come and dance your own way!" The frogs hopped in a circle, the birds flapped their wings, and the butterflies twirled in the air. The chameleon changed colors, from turquoise to orange to yellow, making the dance floor glow. 10

The sifaka showed off his leaps and spins, his white fur shining. Then he stopped and said, "Now watch my friend!" The chameleon swayed slowly, his spiral tail curling and uncurling. The animals cheered. "Wonderful!" they shouted. The chameleon blushed a warm pink. "I am slow," he said, "but I am dancing!" The sifaka hugged him. "You are dancing beautifully!" 11

Then the chameleon said, "Now let's all be still and watch." Everyone froze. The forest was quiet. They saw a ladybug crawl on a leaf. They heard the wind whisper. "This is a dance too," said the chameleon. The animals smiled. "We never noticed!" they said. The sifaka felt calm and happy. Being still was a special move, just like leaping. 12

After the quiet moment, the dance began again. The frogs did the hop, the birds did the flap, and the lemurs did the swing. The sifaka and the chameleon danced together, one fast and one slow, one leaping and one swaying. "Look!" cried a little frog. "They are different, but they dance as friends!" All the animals cheered and joined in. 13

The forest dance lasted until the stars came out. The sifaka and the chameleon sat together on a branch, tired but happy. "I learned that being different makes friendship more fun," said the sifaka. The chameleon nodded. "Me too," he said. "You taught me to sway, and I taught you to be still. Together we have more moves!" They smiled at each other. 14

From that day on, the little sifaka and the chameleon were best friends. They played in the bright green forest, leaping and swaying, being still and watching. And every time they met a new animal, they invited them to dance too. "Everyone has a special move," said the sifaka.
