The Little Rainbow Turtle

The Little Rainbow Turtle

Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In a quiet bend of the river lives Tilly, a calm and patient little turtle whose shell is striped in soft red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. One sunny morning she meets Splash, a glossy brown otter with a cream belly, amber eyes and a tiny blue crystal pendant that shimmers with light. When Tilly offers to share her watercress lunch, a new friendship begins, and Splash soon whispers about a secret: a hidden island down the river, full of wonders but not easy to find. Together the two set off on a river adventure.

The journey tests the two friends in different ways. Splash zips ahead and grows impatient with Tilly's slow, steady paddling; Tilly notices the small clues Splash rushes past, like bubbles rising near a bank. When the river grows shallow, Tilly's careful stone-by-stone steps show the safe path, and when it runs fast, Splash's magic light bridge carries them across side by side. At last they reach the island, where humming flowers and tinkling trees delight them, and where Tilly's habit of noticing small things teaches Splash to slow down and look.

When a sudden storm raises the river, the friends must rely on each other once more: Tilly keeps calm and finds higher ground, and Splash uses his light to bring her to safety. The story shows young readers how patience, careful observation and cooperation can turn a difficult journey into a shared triumph. It is a gentle read for children who enjoy animal friendships and river adventures, and for parents or teachers looking for a story about valuing different strengths.

A Chapter from the Book

The Little Rainbow Turtle - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In a quiet bend of the river, where the water sang softly over smooth stones, lived a little rainbow turtle named Tilly. Her shell was painted in soft stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet, and her skin was pale mint-green. She carried a small woven leaf satchel with a red berry clasp. Tilly was calm and patient, and she loved to watch the river flow by. 1

One sunny morning, Tilly found a shiny blue pebble on the bank. As she reached for it, a glossy brown otter popped up from the water with a splash! His fur was chocolate-brown with a cream belly, and his amber eyes sparkled. A tiny blue crystal pendant hung from a cord around his neck, and little sparkles of blue light shimmered along his fur. 'Hello!' he chirped. 'I'm Splash!' 2

Tilly smiled her gentle smile. 'I'm Tilly,' she said. 'Would you like to share my lunch?' She opened her leaf satchel and pulled out fresh watercress. Splash's whiskers twitched with delight. 'Thank you!' he said. 'You're very kind.' They sat together on the warm stones, munching and chatting, and a new friendship began to bloom. 3

Splash's amber eyes grew wide with excitement. 'I know a secret!' he whispered. 'There's a hidden island down the river, where the water curves like a smile. It's full of wonders, but it's not easy to find.' Tilly's big brown eyes shone. 'A hidden island!' she said. 'Let's go on a river adventure!' And so they set off, with Splash leading the way and Tilly paddling steadily behind. 4

The river was wide and swift. Splash zipped ahead, his sleek tail steering him quickly through the water. But Tilly paddled slowly, her short sturdy legs moving in a steady rhythm. 'Hurry up!' called Splash. 'We'll never get there at this pace!' Tilly just smiled. 'Slow and steady,' she said. 'I'll get there.' Splash sighed and waited, tapping his tail on a rock. 5

Soon they came to a place where the river split into two paths. 'Which way?' asked Tilly. Splash dashed from one side to the other, his whiskers twitching. 'This way!' he said, pointing left. But Tilly noticed tiny bubbles rising near the right bank. 'Look,' she said. 'The water is bubbling there. Maybe that's the way to the island.' Splash grinned. 'Good eyes, Tilly!' 6

They followed the bubbling water. Soon the river grew shallow, and smooth stones peeked above the surface. Splash tried to swim, but bumped his tummy. 'Ouch!' he said. 'It's too shallow for me.' Tilly carefully stepped from stone to stone, testing each one with her sturdy legs. 'Follow me,' she said. 'I'll find the safe path.' And she did, step by slow step. 7

On the other side, the river rushed faster. Splash's blue crystal pendant glowed. 'I can make a bridge of light!' he said. He twirled his tail, and sparkles of blue light danced across the water, forming a shimmering path. Tilly blinked in wonder. 'That's magical!' she said. 'But it looks slippery. Let's cross together.' So they did, side by side, holding on to each other. 8

At last, they saw the hidden island. It rose from the river like a green jewel, ringed by willow trees. 'We found it!' cheered Splash, doing a happy flip. Tilly smiled. 'We found it together,' she said. They swam to the shore, and Tilly's rainbow shell caught the sunlight, making a little rainbow on the sand. 'A rainbow welcome!' laughed Splash. 9

The island was full of wonders. There were flowers that hummed like bees and trees with leaves that tinkled like bells. Splash raced from one treasure to the next, chattering with excitement. Tilly followed more slowly, noticing small things: a tiny shell, a smooth pebble, a beetle with golden wings. 'Look at this!' she said. 'Isn't it beautiful?' Splash paused. 'I would have missed that,' he said. 10

Suddenly, the sky grew dark. A gust of wind blew, and the river rose. 'Oh no!' cried Splash. 'The water is rising! How will we get back?' He darted about, his whiskers trembling. Tilly stayed calm. 'Let's think,' she said. 'We need to find higher ground.' She looked around and spotted a tall rock. 'There!' she said. 'Climb up and wait for the water to go down.' 11

Splash scrambled up the rock, but Tilly was too slow. The water swirled around her. 'I can't climb!' she said. Splash's amber eyes lit up. 'I have an idea!' He twirled his tail, and his blue crystal pendant glowed brighter than ever. Sparkles of light formed a gentle slide from the rock down to Tilly. 'Grab on!' he called. Tilly held tight, and the light lifted her up to safety. 12

On the rock, they huddled together, safe and dry. 'You saved me,' said Tilly. 'And you kept me calm,' said Splash. 'We make a good team.' They watched the water swirl below, and Splash said, 'I'm glad I have you, Tilly. You notice things I miss.' Tilly smiled. 'And you're quick and clever. Together, we can solve anything.' The rain stopped, and the sun peeked out. 13

The water went down, and they climbed back to the shore. 'Let's explore the island a little more,' said Splash. They wandered among the tinkling trees and humming flowers, and Tilly found a pretty shell to add to her satchel. Splash found a shiny blue stone. 'For you,' he said, 'to remember our adventure.' Tilly placed it in her satchel and gave Splash a watercress sandwich.
