The Little Penguin's Lantern - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In the icy south, where the snow sparkles like sugar, lived a little penguin named Pip. Pip had a glossy black back, a snowy white belly, and a tiny orange beak. He wore a small red scarf with a yellow tassel. Pip loved to waddle and explore, but he did not like the dark. One morning, Pip found something wonderful half-buried in the snow: a tiny brass lantern with a warm golden glow. 1

Pip picked up the lantern and held it close. The golden light danced on the snow and made him feel warm inside. "I will keep you safe," he whispered to the lantern. He waddled toward the big ice hills, where the snow gleamed blue and white. The lantern bobbed as he walked, and its light made little rainbows on the ice. Pip felt a tiny bit brave. 2

Suddenly, a soft whoosh came from above. A beautiful bird landed on the snow. She had icy white feathers that shimmered faintly blue, long graceful wings, and a silver beak. Her violet eyes sparkled like stars, and a tiny crown of frost crystals sat on her head. "Hello," she said. "I am Luma, a snow petrel. What a lovely lantern you have!" 3

Pip's heart beat fast. He had never met a magical bird before. "I am Pip," he said shyly. "I found this lantern in the snow." Luma smiled, and a thin silver ribbon tied at her wing trailed tiny snowflakes. "It is a special lantern," she said. "It can light the way to a secret ice cave. Would you like to see it?" Pip looked at the glowing lantern and nodded. 4

Luma led the way, flying low over the snow. Pip waddled after her, holding his lantern high. They came to a cave entrance that glowed with soft blue light. Inside, the walls shimmered and sparkled like a million diamonds. "Oh!" gasped Pip. "It's beautiful!" But the cave was also big and dark in places, and Pip's little feet felt wobbly. Luma landed beside him. "Stay close," she said gently. 5

Pip took a deep breath and stepped inside. The glowing ice made strange shadows that danced on the walls. Some of the shadows looked like giant wings. Pip's heart went thump, thump, thump. He held his lantern tighter. "It's a bit scary," he whispered. Luma fluttered next to him. "I know," she said. "But we are together. And your lantern is bright. Let's go a little further." 6

They walked deeper into the cave. The ice above them sparkled with colors: pink, blue, and green. "Look!" said Luma, pointing with her wing. "Those are ice crystals that catch the light." Pip smiled. The cave did not feel quite so scary now. He held up his lantern, and the light made the crystals glow even brighter. "It's like magic," he said. Luma laughed, a sound like tinkling bells. 7

But then they came to a place where the cave split into three dark tunnels. Pip stopped. "Which way do we go?" he asked. His voice sounded small. Luma flew up and looked around. "I'm not sure," she said. "But we can figure it out together." Pip felt a flutter in his tummy. The dark tunnels looked very dark indeed. He wished he were back home in his cozy nest. 8

Luma landed on a rock and thought. "Your lantern might help," she said. "If we hold it high, maybe we can see which tunnel glows the most." Pip lifted the lantern as high as he could. The light shone into each tunnel. The left tunnel sparkled with tiny blue lights. "That one!" said Pip. "It looks friendly." Luma nodded. "Good thinking!" she said. They started down the left tunnel together. 9

The left tunnel was narrow, and the walls were close. Pip had to waddle carefully. But the blue lights grew brighter and brighter. Soon, they stepped into a huge cave room. The ceiling was covered with sparkling ice that looked like stars. "Wow!" whispered Pip. "It's like a secret sky!" Luma flew around, her wings shimmering. "I've never seen anything like it," she said happily. 10

Just then, a gust of wind blew through the cave. Pip's lantern flickered. "Oh no!" he cried. "The light is going out!" The cave grew darker, and Pip's heart pounded. He felt very small and very scared. But Luma flew close and wrapped her wing around him. "Don't worry," she said softly. "I am here. Take a deep breath. We can do this together." 11

Pip took a deep breath. He held the lantern steady, and the flame grew strong again. "You're right," he said. "I feel braver when you're here." Luma smiled. "And I feel braver when you're here," she said. "Friends help each other." They looked around the sparkling cave. The ice crystals twinkled as if they were cheering. Pip felt warm inside, even in the cold cave. 12

Then Luma noticed a soft light coming from a small hole in the wall. "Look!" she said. "I think that's the way out." Pip and Luma squeezed through the hole. They found themselves outside, on a snowy hill. The sun was setting, and the sky was pink and gold. Pip could see his home in the distance. "We made it!" he cheered. The lantern glowed happily in his flipper. 13
