The Little Musk Ox's Friend

The Little Musk Ox's Friend

Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

On a wide, white tundra where the wind sings a low, whistling song, a little musk ox lives with his shaggy brown coat, small curved horns and big, gentle dark eyes. He loves his snowy home, but the biting cold makes him shiver, and he dreams of finding a sheltered valley where the wind cannot reach. One crisp morning a small Arctic fox with snowy white fur and sparkling amber eyes appears from behind a drift, also searching for a warm spot, and the two set off together across the frozen landscape.

Their journey takes them over frozen streams and past hills that look like sleeping giants. The fox darts ahead to scout and sniff out cozy resting places, while the musk ox uses his bulk and thick wool to block the wind and share his warmth. When a fierce gust whips snow into their faces, they shelter behind a big rock; when the musk ox slips on a steep ridge, the fox grabs his forehead fluff and pulls him up. Step by step, their friendship grows, and from a high ridge they finally glimpse a valley tucked between two hills, its sides curved like a bowl.

The story follows these two very different animals as they discover what each of them brings to the other: quick eyes and a keen nose on one side, steady strength and a warm coat on the other. It is a gentle tale for young readers about cooperation, trust and the comfort of companionship, showing that friendship can carry you through hardship and make even the coldest place feel like home.

The Little Musk Ox's Friend - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

On the wide, white tundra, where the wind sang a low, whistling song, lived a little musk ox. His shaggy brown coat was thick and warm, with tips of tan that glowed in the pale light. He had small curved horns and big, gentle dark eyes. Each morning, he munched on frosty grass and watched the snow swirl like tiny dancers. 1

The tundra stretched forever, a sea of white under a soft gray sky. The little musk ox loved his home, but sometimes the cold wind bit his nose and made him shiver. He would tuck his short legs under his round body and wait for the wind to soften. 'One day,' he murmured, 'I will find a place where the wind cannot reach.' 2

One crisp morning, as the sun peeked over the snowy hills, the little musk ox heard a tiny yip. Out from behind a drift popped a small Arctic fox. Her fur was snowy white, her ears pointed, and her amber eyes sparkled with curiosity. 'Hello!' she barked. 'I'm looking for a warm spot. The wind is awfully chilly today.' 3

The musk ox smiled, his dark eyes twinkling. 'I know a thing or two about chilly winds,' he said. 'My wool keeps me warm, but even I dream of a sheltered valley.' The fox tilted her head. 'A sheltered valley? I've heard of such a place—where the wind can't find you and the snow falls soft and slow.' 4

'Then let's find it together!' said the musk ox. The fox wagged her bushy tail. 'I'm quick and curious,' she said. 'I can scout ahead and sniff out cozy spots.' So the two friends set off across the tundra, the musk ox's sturdy legs crunching through the snow, the fox's light paws barely leaving a print. 5

They walked for hours, over frozen streams and past hills that looked like sleeping giants. The wind howled, but the musk ox stepped steadily, his shaggy coat ruffling. The fox darted ahead, her nose twitching. 'This way!' she called. 'I smell something—maybe a gap between the hills!' The musk ox lumbered after her, hope warming his heart. 6

Suddenly, the wind grew fiercer, whipping snow into their faces. The little musk ox lowered his head, his small horns facing the gust. 'We need shelter!' he bellowed. The fox pressed close to his side, her white fur blending with the snow. 'Over there!' she yipped, pointing with her snout. 'A big rock— we can hide behind it!' 7

They huddled behind the rock, the musk ox's bulk blocking the wind. The fox burrowed into his shaggy wool. 'Your coat is so warm,' she sighed. 'Like a blanket of clouds.' The musk ox chuckled. 'And your quick eyes are a big help,' he said. 'We make a good team.' They rested until the wind died down, then continued on. 8

As they journeyed, the fox found cozy spots to rest: a hollow under a drift, a nook between two boulders. Each time, the musk ox would settle beside her, sharing his warmth. 'You always find the snuggest places,' he said. The fox grinned. 'And you always keep the wind away,' she replied. Their friendship grew with every step. 9

One day, they climbed a steep, snowy ridge. The musk ox slipped, but the fox grabbed his tuft of forehead fluff with her teeth and pulled. 'Got you!' she yelped. The musk ox scrambled up, panting. 'Thank you, little friend,' he said. 'I couldn't have done it without you.' From the top, they saw a promising sight: a valley tucked between two hills. 10

The valley looked perfect—its sides curved like a bowl, and the wind seemed to swirl above it, never touching the ground. 'Do you think that's the sheltered valley?' asked the fox. The musk ox nodded slowly. 'It looks like it. Let's go see.' They hurried down the slope, their hearts beating with excitement. 11

As they entered the valley, the wind faded to a whisper. Snowflakes drifted gently, and the air felt still and kind. 'We found it!' cheered the fox, spinning in a circle. The musk ox breathed deeply. 'It's just as I dreamed,' he said. 'A place where the cold wind cannot reach us.' They explored the valley, finding soft moss under the snow. 12

In the heart of the valley, they found a snug den behind a curtain of icy willow. The fox curled up in the softest spot, and the musk ox lay beside her, his wool spilling over like a warm blanket. 'This is our winter home,' said the fox. The musk ox smiled. 'Our friendship kept us going,' he said. 'And now it keeps us warm.' 13

All winter long, they stayed in the valley. The musk ox shared his wool, and the fox found berries and roots to eat. They played games in the snow and told stories under the starry sky. Even when the wind howled outside the valley, they were cozy and safe. 'Friends make the coldest days feel warm,' said the fox. 14

One morning, the sun shone brighter, and the snow began to melt. 'Spring is coming,' said the musk ox. The fox nodded. 'But we'll always have our valley.' They promised to meet there every winter. 'Friendship is the best shelter of all,' said the musk ox. And they knew it was true.
