🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:02

In a wide, sandy desert where the wind hums a quiet song, a little jerboa lives alone. Small as a mouse, with sandy beige fur, long hind legs for hopping and big upright ears that catch every whisper of the sand, he carries a tiny woven grass satchel with a few seeds and a smooth pebble. Each night he calls out to the desert, but only the wind answers, and his heart feels lonely.

One cool, starry night he hears a rustle near a prickly cactus and meets Spike, a desert hedgehog wearing a tiny blue scarf. The two become friends and set off to explore the dunes together. On their journey they face a swirling wind that frightens the jerboa, long shadows that look like giant fingers, and a rocky hill that Spike's short legs cannot climb. Each time, the jerboa's quick thinking and Spike's calm courage help them through, until the jerboa's keen ears catch the sound of splashing water and lead them to a hidden oasis of palm trees and a cool, sparkling pool.

The story follows these two very different creatures as they discover that company makes the desert feel smaller and the darkest night warmer. Young children will enjoy the gentle adventure, the desert setting and the simple lesson that friendship and teamwork help us face fear.

The Little Jerboa - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In the wide, sandy desert, where the wind hums a quiet song, lived a little jerboa. He was very small, about the size of a mouse, with sandy beige fur and a long, tufted tail. His big round dark brown eyes sparkled as he looked out at the moonlit dunes, but his heart felt lonely. He wished he had someone to share the desert night with. 1

The jerboa had long hind legs for hopping and big upright ears that heard every whisper of the sand. He carried a tiny woven grass satchel slung across his body, holding a few seeds and a smooth pebble. Every night he hopped over the dunes, leaving tiny footprints behind. 'Hello, desert,' he called softly. But the desert only whispered back, and the jerboa felt small and alone. 2

One cool night, as the stars twinkled like tiny lanterns, the jerboa heard a rustle near a prickly cactus. He hopped closer and saw a round little creature with pale tan and cream spines. It was a desert hedgehog! The hedgehog wore a tiny blue scarf around his neck. 'Hello,' said the jerboa shyly. 'Are you lonely too?' The hedgehog blinked his small black eyes and smiled. 'A little,' he admitted. 3

The hedgehog introduced himself as Spike. His soft light brown face crinkled into a friendly grin. 'I've never met a jerboa before,' he said. 'Your legs are so long!' The jerboa wiggled his tufted tail. 'And your spines are so spiky!' They both laughed. 'Would you like to explore the desert with me?' asked the jerboa. Spike nodded. 'I'd like that very much,' he said, adjusting his blue scarf. 4

So the two friends set off into the night. The jerboa hopped over the sand, his long hind legs bouncing like springs. Spike scurried beside him, his little dark paws pattering on the cool ground. They crossed a field of smooth stones, and the jerboa leaped over each one. 'Wait for me!' giggled Spike, climbing carefully. 'You're so fast!' The jerboa slowed down and waited, his big ears twitching happily. 5

As they traveled, the wind began to blow. It whooshed and swirled, lifting sand into the air. The jerboa's big ears flapped, and he felt a little scared. 'Hold on!' cried Spike. He tucked his spiny back against the wind and pulled his blue scarf tighter. 'Stay close to me,' he said kindly. The jerboa huddled beside his friend, and the wind didn't seem so fierce anymore. 6

When the wind died down, they hopped onward. But soon the desert grew very dark. Long shadows stretched across the sand like giant fingers. The jerboa's heart thumped. 'What's that?' he whispered, pointing at a shadow. Spike looked calmly. 'It's just a cactus,' he said. 'Shadows can't hurt us.' The jerboa took a deep breath and felt brave again. Together, they hopped past the shadowy shapes. 7

They came to a rocky hill, and the jerboa's long legs helped him leap from rock to rock. But Spike's short legs couldn't reach. 'I'm stuck,' he said. The jerboa thought for a moment. Then he found a flat stone and pushed it to make a step. 'Climb on this!' he said. Spike scrambled up, and they continued together, proud of their teamwork. 8

The night grew quieter, and the stars shone brighter. The jerboa's big ears caught a new sound—a soft splashing. 'Do you hear that?' he asked. Spike tilted his head. 'It sounds like water!' They hurried toward the sound, their hearts full of hope. The jerboa's tufted tail bobbed as he hopped, and Spike's blue scarf fluttered behind him. 9

They pushed through some tall dry grass and stopped in wonder. There, hidden among the dunes, was a small oasis. Palm trees swayed gently, and a pool of cool water sparkled under the moon. 'It's beautiful!' gasped the jerboa. Spike's small black eyes widened. 'I've never seen anything like it!' They drank the sweet water and rested on the soft grass. 10

The jerboa looked at his friend. 'I was so lonely before,' he said. 'But now, with you, the desert doesn't feel so big.' Spike smiled and wrapped his blue scarf around both of them. 'Friendship makes even the darkest night feel warm,' he said. The jerboa nodded. 'Will you explore with me every night?' he asked. 'Every night,' promised Spike. 11

From that night on, the little jerboa and the desert hedgehog met under the stars. They hopped over sand and stones, faced the wind and shadows together, and always found something new. The jerboa's long legs and big ears led the way, and Spike's calm courage kept them steady. They laughed and talked, and the desert became their playground. 12

One evening, they sat by the oasis and watched the moon rise. 'Do you remember when you were lonely?' asked Spike. The jerboa nodded. 'I thought the desert was empty,' he said. 'But it was full of friends waiting to be found.' Spike adjusted his blue scarf. 'And full of hidden oases,' he added. They smiled, grateful for each other and for the desert's surprises. 13

The jerboa realized that home wasn't just a place—it was being with someone who cared. With Spike beside him, the desert felt like home. They promised to always help each other, just as they had on that first night.
