On a wide, sunny savanna, a small, round elephant named Tembo spends his days exploring the golden grass. One morning a magical hornbill called Kito swoops down from the sky and asks to be his friend, and the two become inseparable. They play hide-and-seek and race across the plains, discovering that Kito's sharp eyes and Tembo's strong trunk make them a great team.
When the rains fail to come, the river shrinks to a trickle and the animals grow worried. Tembo and Kito set out to find water. Kito spots a narrow path hidden by tall grass and rocks, and it leads them to dark, damp soil where tiny green shoots are growing. Kito realizes water must lie underground and encourages Tembo to dig with his tusks and trunk, even though Tembo has never dug a hole before. With his friend's cheerful support, Tembo keeps scooping until cool, clear water bubbles up from the ground.
The story shows young readers how friendship and teamwork can solve difficult problems: each friend contributes a different strength, and neither could have found the spring alone. It also gently introduces ideas about drought, hidden water, and how a shared discovery can become a gift for the whole community. The simple, warm language and animal characters make it well suited to preschool and early primary children, whether read aloud at bedtime or enjoyed by beginning readers themselves.

The Little Elephant's Secret - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL
On the wide, sunny savanna, where golden grass swayed in the warm breeze, lived a little elephant named Tembo. He was small and round, with soft grey wrinkles and big floppy ears that flapped when he walked. His dark brown eyes sparkled with curiosity, and his tiny tail tuft swished happily. Every morning, Tembo loved to explore the world around him. (61 words) 1
One bright morning, as Tembo munched on sweet leaves, a flash of blue caught his eye. Down from the sky swooped a magical hornbill named Kito, his black and white feathers gleaming. His bright yellow beak curved like a smile, and his long tail feathers shimmered with blue tips. 'Hello!' chirped Kito. 'I'm new here. Would you like to be friends?' Tembo nodded, his big ears flapping with joy. (65 words) 2
From that day on, Tembo and Kito were best friends. They played hide-and-seek in the tall grass and raced across the savanna. Kito's sharp eyes could spot a beetle from far away, while Tembo's strong trunk could lift a heavy branch. 'We make a great team!' said Tembo. Kito agreed, his orange-red eye rings twinkling. Together, they explored every corner of their sunny home. (63 words) 3
But one season, the rains did not come. The sun beat down, and the savanna grew dry and dusty. The river shrank to a trickle, and the animals looked worried. Tembo's trunk felt heavy with sadness. 'What will we do?' he asked. Kito perched on Tembo's ear and said, 'Don't worry. We'll find a way together.' (57 words) 4
Tembo and Kito set off to search for water. They walked for hours under the hot sun. Tembo's big floppy ears flopped as he trudged along. Kito flew high above, his sharp eyes scanning the ground. 'I see something!' Kito called. 'A path! It's hidden by tall grass and rocks!' Tembo hurried to follow his friend. (59 words) 5
Kito led Tembo to a narrow path that wound between prickly bushes. 'This path looks secret,' said Tembo. 'Do you think it leads to water?' Kito nodded. 'My eyes tell me it does!' They followed the path carefully, stepping over fallen branches. The savanna around them was quiet, as if holding its breath. (56 words) 6
At the end of the path, they found a patch of ground that looked different. The soil was dark and damp, and tiny green shoots poked through. 'Water must be here, underground!' said Kito, his tail feathers shimmering. Tembo pressed his trunk to the ground. 'It's soft,' he said. 'But how do we get the water out?' (57 words) 7
Kito thought hard. 'Your trunk is strong, Tembo. You can dig!' Tembo wasn't sure. He had never dug a hole before. But he trusted his friend. He pushed his small white tusks into the soft earth and began to scoop. Dirt flew everywhere! 'Keep going!' cheered Kito. 'You can do it!' (54 words) 8
Tembo dug deeper and deeper. His trunk scooped away the soil, and his big ears flapped with effort. Suddenly, he felt something cool and wet. 'Kito! I feel water!' he trumpeted. Kito swooped down to look. 'Dig a little more!' he urged. Tembo gave one last mighty scoop. (53 words) 9
Whoosh! Water bubbled up from the ground, clear and sparkling! It splashed over Tembo's feet and made a little pool. 'We did it!' shouted Tembo. Kito danced in the air, his bluetipped tail feathers flashing. 'You did it, Tembo! Your strong trunk was just what we needed!' They laughed and splashed in the cool water. (57 words) 10
The sound of water brought other animals to the secret spot. Zebras, giraffes, and warthogs came to drink. 'Hooray for Tembo and Kito!' they cheered. The friends felt proud. 'We couldn't have done it alone,' said Tembo. 'Kito's sharp eyes found the path, and my trunk dug the spring.' Everyone nodded. Teamwork had saved the day. (61 words) 11
Soon, the word spread across the savanna. Animals came from far and wide to drink from the new spring. The water flowed day and night, and the dry land began to soften. Birds sang, and butterflies fluttered. Tembo and Kito watched happily. 'Our secret spring is a gift for everyone,' said Kito. Tembo smiled, his dark eyes shining. (59 words) 12
With water, the savanna slowly bloomed again. Green grass sprouted, and colorful flowers opened their petals. The animals celebrated with a big feast. They danced and sang under the wide sky. Tembo wore a woven grass bracelet on his front leg, a gift from the other elephants. Kito wore his seedpod pendant proudly. 'Friendship and teamwork made this happen,' they said. (63 words) 13
From that day on, Tembo and Kito were known as the heroes of the hidden spring. They learned that different abilities work best together. Kito's sharp eyes and Tembo's strong trunk made a perfect pair. And whenever the savanna needed help, they were ready. 'No problem is too big when friends work together,' said Tembo. Kito chirped in agreement. (59 words) 14
The savanna stayed green and happy, and the secret spring never ran dry. Tembo and Kito remained best friends, exploring and helping others. They knew that their different talents made them stronger. And every evening, as the sun set, they sat by the spring and watched the stars twinkle. 'Our secret is safe,' whispered Tembo. Kito nodded, his eye rings glowing.
