The Little Elephant's Friend

The Little Elephant's Friend

Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In the warm, golden savanna, a little elephant named Tembo with soft blue-grey skin and huge floppy ears watches the other animals play and wishes he had a friend. One morning a tiny meerkat named Mira, wearing a little red neckerchief, pops up from a burrow and invites him to explore. As they wander past termite mounds and through swishing grass, Tembo discovers that friendship can make even an ordinary day feel full.

Their walk turns into a shared adventure when Mira's sharp nose smells water and her quick eyes spot a hidden watering hole behind high rocks. Tembo pushes the rocks aside with his strength, but thorny bushes, a narrow path and a wide ditch block the way. Each obstacle shows how the two friends depend on each other: Mira climbs high to find the safe route and warns of slippery stones, while Tembo clears thorns with his curled trunk and lifts Mira gently across the ditch.

Rather than keep the sparkling pool to themselves, Tembo and Mira return to the savanna clearing to lead the giraffes, zebras and monkeys along the safe path, with Tembo helping the smaller animals across the ditch one by one. The story teaches young readers that big and small can make a great team, that everyone has something to offer, and that good things are better when they are shared. Its gentle, simple telling suits children in the early years of primary school, whether they are reading alone or listening at story time.

The Little Elephant's Friend - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In the warm, golden savanna, where acacia trees stretched their branches like open arms, lived a little elephant named Tembo. He had soft blue-grey skin, huge floppy ears with pink edges, and a short trunk with a curl at the tip. Every day he watched the other animals play together. 'I wish I had a friend,' he sighed, scuffing the dry dust with his small foot. 1

One morning, while Tembo was splashing his trunk in a shallow puddle, a tiny sandy meerkat popped up from a nearby burrow. She wore a little red neckerchief and stood tall on her hind legs, her bright amber eyes sparkling. 'Hello!' she chirped. 'I'm Mira. You look lonely. Want to explore with me?' Tembo's big ears flapped with joy. 'Yes, please!' he trumpeted softly. 2

Mira was quick and clever. She darted ahead, her long tail with a dark tip swishing, and Tembo lumbered behind, his round belly wobbling. They wandered past tall termite mounds and through swishing grass. Mira told funny jokes, and Tembo laughed so hard his tiny tusks wiggled. For the first time, the little elephant didn't feel lonely at all. 'Friends are the best,' he thought. 3

As the sun climbed higher, Mira suddenly froze, her twitchy nose sniffing the air. 'I smell water!' she squeaked. She scrambled up a fallen log and peered into the distance. 'There's a hidden watering hole behind those rocks!' Tembo tried to look, but the rocks were too high. 'I can't see it,' he said. 'But I can push them aside!' Mira clapped her tiny paws. 4

Tembo pushed with all his might, his big floppy ears flapping. The rocks tumbled away, revealing a sparkling pool of cool, clear water. 'You did it!' Mira cheered, dancing around him. But when they stepped closer, they saw the path was blocked by a tangle of thorny bushes. 'We need to find a safe way through,' said Mira, frowning. 'Let's work together.' 5

Mira scampered up a tall tree to get a better view. 'I see a narrow path to the left!' she called down. 'But there are sharp thorns.' Tembo studied the bushes. 'I can clear them with my strong trunk,' he said. Carefully, he wrapped his curled trunk around the thorny branches and pulled them aside, one by one. Mira cheered from above, 'You're so strong!' 6

With the thorns cleared, they started down the winding path. Mira hopped ahead, checking for slippery stones. 'Watch out here!' she warned. Tembo stepped carefully, his big feet making soft thuds. But soon they reached a deep ditch that was too wide for Mira to jump. 'I can't cross,' she said, her tail drooping. 'Don't worry,' said Tembo. 'Climb on my trunk!' 7

Mira climbed onto Tembo's curled trunk, and he lifted her gently across the ditch. She landed safely on the other side. 'You're my hero!' she squeaked. Then she noticed a narrow ledge on the far side. 'Follow me—I'll show you the safe steps,' she said, nimbly leaping from stone to stone. Tembo followed, trusting his friend's quick eyes and brave heart. 8

Finally, they stood at the edge of the hidden watering hole. The water sparkled like liquid sapphire, and dragonflies danced above it. 'We found it!' Tembo trumpeted. 'But it's so far from everyone,' said Mira. 'We should share it!' Tembo nodded. 'Let's go tell all our friends!' They raced back, eager to spread the good news. 9

Tembo and Mira hurried to the savanna clearing. 'Everyone, come quick!' Tembo called, his trunk raised high. 'We found a secret watering hole!' The giraffes, zebras, and monkeys gathered around, curious. 'But how do we get there?' asked a zebra. 'It's hidden behind rocks and thorns.' Mira stepped forward. 'We'll show you the safe path,' she promised. 10

Tembo led the way, pushing aside any remaining branches with his strong trunk. Mira darted ahead, calling out warnings about tricky spots. 'Step here!' she chirped. 'Watch that root!' The animals followed in a long, happy line. When they reached the ditch, Tembo helped the smaller animals across, one by one, using his trunk as a gentle bridge. 11

At last, everyone stood beside the sparkling water. The giraffes dipped their long necks, the zebras drank noisily, and the monkeys splashed with glee. 'Hooray for Tembo and Mira!' they cheered. Tembo's eyes shone with happiness. 'We couldn't have done it without each other,' he said. Mira smiled. 'That's right—big and small, we make a great team!' 12

From that day on, the watering hole became a special gathering place for all the animals. Tembo and Mira visited every day. Sometimes Tembo would lift Mira high so she could see far away, and sometimes Mira would scout ahead to find the juiciest leaves. They learned that being different was wonderful, and that teamwork made great things happen. 13

One evening, as the sun set in a blaze of orange and pink, Tembo sat beside the water with Mira. 'I used to feel so lonely,' he said softly. 'Now I have a best friend and so many others.' Mira leaned against his big foot. 'Friendship is like the watering hole,' she said. 'When you share it, it grows bigger and better.' 14

Tembo looked at his woven grass bracelet and smiled. 'You know, Mira, I used to think being big was the only thing that mattered. But you're small and quick, and you're the bravest friend I know.' Mira twitched her nose. 'And you're the kindest, strongest elephant in the whole savanna.' They watched the stars twinkle, happy and together.
