A Chapter from the Book
The Little Bongo - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL
Deep in the green forest, where sunlight dripped like honey through the leaves, lived a little bongo. He was small and slender, with a warm chestnut-red coat and thin white stripes, like painted ribbons. His big gentle eyes sparkled with curiosity. Two tiny budding horns poked up from his head. He loved to explore every leafy path. But most of all, he loved to help. 1
One morning, the little bongo heard a sad sniffle behind a fern. He peeked through the fronds and saw a young forest hog. The hog had coarse dark brown bristly fur, a broad flat snout, and a short curly tail. His small black eyes were wet with tears. "I'm lost," the hog whispered. "I can't find my way home." 2
"Don't worry," said the little bongo gently. "I will help you." The forest hog looked up, surprised. "Really? You would do that for me?" The bongo nodded. "Of course! Friends help each other." So the two set off together, the bongo leading the way through the tall ferns. The forest hog followed, his little hooves pattering softly on the moss. 3
They walked past tall trees and over mossy logs. The forest hog was a little clumsy, and sometimes he tripped. Each time, the bongo waited patiently and said, "It's okay. We'll go slowly." They searched high and low, peeking under bushes and behind rocks. But the forest hog's home was nowhere to be found. "Maybe we should try that way," the bongo said, pointing toward a thicket. 4
As they pushed through the thicket, the forest hog sighed. "I'm sorry I'm so much trouble." The little bongo shook his head. "You're not trouble. You're my friend." They kept walking, side by side. The bongo's white stripes shimmered in the dappled light. The hog's curly tail wiggled with hope. They made a good team, one small and swift, the other round and sturdy. 5
Suddenly, the bongo stopped. "Do you hear that?" he asked. The forest hog tilted his head. "Hear what?" "Water!" said the bongo. "A stream! Maybe your home is near water." They hurried toward the sound. The trees grew thicker, and the ferns grew taller. But the two friends did not give up. They pushed forward, eager to find what lay ahead. 6
They squeezed between two big bushes and gasped. Before them lay a hidden clearing, bathed in golden light. It was filled with rare flowers, blossoms of every color, nodding in the breeze. "Oh!" whispered the forest hog. "It's beautiful!" The little bongo smiled. "I've never seen anything like it." They stepped into the clearing, their eyes wide with wonder. 7
The forest hog sniffed the flowers. "They smell like honey and sunshine," he said. He felt happy for the first time that day. "Thank you, little bongo," he said. "You helped me find this place." The bongo's heart felt warm. "I'm glad we found it together," he said. They sat among the rare flowers and rested for a while, enjoying the peaceful clearing. 8
"But we still haven't found your home," said the bongo. The forest hog looked around. "Maybe my home is closer than I thought," he said. "I remember a stream and flowers like these." They listened and heard the gurgle of water. They followed the sound to the edge of the clearing, where a small stream bubbled over smooth stones. "This way!" said the hog happily. 9
They followed the stream until they saw a familiar mud wallow and a cozy den under a fallen tree. "That's my home!" cried the forest hog. He danced a little jig, his curly tail spinning. "You found it! You found it!" The bongo laughed. "We found it together," he said. The forest hog's family came out to greet them, oinking with joy. 10
The forest hog turned to the little bongo. "You are the best friend I ever had," he said. "You helped me when I was lost and sad. I will never forget that." The bongo's big gentle eyes shone. "And you helped me find a beautiful hidden clearing," he said. "Friendship grows through helpfulness." They nodded, understanding each other perfectly. 11
From that day on, the little bongo and the forest hog were best friends. Every morning, they met at the edge of the forest and walked together to the hidden clearing. They played among the rare flowers, chasing butterflies and sniffing blossoms. Sometimes they sat quietly, watching the clouds drift by. The clearing became their special place, a secret shared by two friends. 12
One afternoon, the forest hog said, "Remember when I was lost and you helped me?" The bongo nodded. "I was sad and scared," said the hog. "But you were kind and brave. That's why I trust you." The bongo smiled. "And you were brave too," he said. "You kept going even when you were tired. We helped each other." They both knew it was true. 13
The little bongo learned something important that day. Helping someone else can lead to wonderful surprises. If he had not stopped to help the lost forest hog, he might never have found the hidden clearing with its rare flowers. And he might never have found a best friend. Kindness, he realized, makes the world a brighter place. 14
Now, if you ever wander deep into the green forest, you might hear laughter. Follow it, and you may find a little bongo and a forest hog playing among rare flowers. They will wave at you with happy eyes. And if you are lost, they will help you find your way. Because that is what friends do, and their friendship grows stronger every day.
