The Little Bear's Picnic

The Little Bear's Picnic

Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

One sunny morning, Little Bear sets off through the meadow with his woven basket and sky-blue neckerchief, hoping to find someone new to share a picnic with. Under a tall oak tree he meets Mouse, a tiny grey creature in a red scarf who carries an acorn-cap satchel. A piece of honey cake is shared, favourite things are compared, and by afternoon the two are planning a woodland picnic with blankets, sandwiches of every size, honey buns and berries. Little Bear dreams of making the day perfect for everyone, and the story quietly turns on his realisation that a big picnic could feel overwhelming for a very small guest.

The next morning Little Bear packs both large and tiny treats, rolls up a big blanket and a small one, and meets an excited but nervous Mouse, who worries she might get lost in the blanket or be unable to reach the food. His plan is simple and kind: a tiny blanket laid beside the big one like an island, with mini sandwiches, small cheese cubes and a little cup of berry juice within her reach. When a rabbit and a squirrel arrive with carrots and acorns, the meadow fills with chatter, and Mouse sits on her own blanket feeling special rather than overlooked.

The story closes with an exchange of handmade gifts, a grass-and-flower bracelet and a carved wooden acorn, showing that thoughtfulness given is thoughtfulness returned. Told in gentle, simple language, it is suited to young children and to adults reading aloud, offering a warm lesson about noticing what others need, welcoming a new friend, and making room for everyone at the table.

The Little Bear's Picnic - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

One sunny morning, Little Bear skipped through the meadow with his sky-blue neckerchief fluttering. He carried a small woven basket and hummed a happy tune. The world smelled of pine needles and wildflowers. Little Bear loved picnics more than anything. Today, he hoped to find someone new to share one with. He stopped by a tall oak tree and set his basket down. 1

Just then, a tiny grey mouse peeked out from behind a root. She had large pink ears, a little red scarf, and an acorn-cap satchel. Her bright black eyes blinked at the bear. "Hello," squeaked the mouse. "I'm Mouse." Little Bear smiled his warmest smile. "Hello, Mouse! I'm Little Bear. Would you like to share my snack?" Mouse nodded shyly, and her whiskers twitched with curiosity. 2

Little Bear opened his basket and shared a tiny piece of honey cake. Mouse nibbled it happily. "This is delicious!" she squeaked. They sat together under the oak, talking about their favourite things. Mouse loved collecting acorns and climbing. Little Bear loved berries and cozy naps. "We should have a proper picnic," said Little Bear. "A big one! With blankets and lots of food!" Mouse's eyes sparkled. "Yes, please!" 3

The two friends planned their picnic all afternoon. "We need a big blanket for me and a tiny one for you," said Little Bear. "And sandwiches of every size!" Mouse clapped her paws. "I can bring tiny berries and seeds!" They decided to invite the whole woodland. Little Bear would bake honey buns. Mouse would gather nuts. They promised to meet the next morning and make everything ready. 4

That night, Little Bear thought about his new friend. He wanted the picnic to be perfect for everyone. He remembered how small Mouse was compared to him. "A big picnic might feel scary for a tiny guest," he thought. So he planned extra small treats: mini sandwiches, tiny berry tarts, and a little cup. He also found a soft, cozy spot just right for a mouse. He smiled and fell asleep. 5

The next morning, Little Bear got up early. He packed his basket with big sandwiches, honey buns, and juicy berries. He added tiny cheese cubes, small seeds, and bite-sized cakes. He rolled up a big blanket and a tiny one. Then he hurried to the meadow. Mouse was already there, waiting with a little bag of nuts. She looked excited but a bit nervous. 6

"Good morning, Mouse!" called Little Bear. "Are you ready for our picnic?" Mouse smiled, but her whiskers drooped a little. "I'm ready," she said. "But I'm worried. The picnic might be too big for me. What if I get lost in the blanket? Or can't reach the food?" Little Bear sat down beside her. "Don't worry," he said kindly. "I have a plan." 7

Little Bear spread the big blanket on the soft grass. Then he placed the tiny blanket right beside it, like a little island. "This is your cozy spot," he said. Mouse's eyes grew wide. "It's perfect!" she squeaked. Little Bear set out the big food on one side and the tiny treats on the other. There were mini sandwiches, small cheese cubes, and a tiny cup of berry juice. Mouse felt welcome. 8

More woodland friends arrived. A rabbit brought carrots, and a squirrel brought acorns. They all admired the picnic. "Look at the tiny treats!" said the rabbit. "And the big ones!" said the squirrel. Mouse sat on her little blanket, feeling special. Little Bear passed around the food, making sure everyone had a share. The meadow filled with happy chatter and laughter. 9

Mouse took a bite of a mini sandwich. "This is the best picnic ever!" she squeaked. She tried a tiny berry tart and a small cheese cube. "I can reach everything!" Little Bear smiled. "I wanted everything to be just right for you," he said. "And for everyone," said Mouse. "You are so thoughtful." They shared a tiny cup of berry juice and watched a butterfly flutter by. 10

After lunch, Mouse wanted to thank Little Bear. She had an idea. "May I give you a tiny gift?" she asked. She opened her acorn-cap satchel and took out a little woven bracelet made of grass and tiny flowers. "I made it for you," she said. "Because you made me feel welcome." Little Bear's eyes sparkled. "It's beautiful!" He tied it carefully around his wrist. 11

Little Bear had a gift for Mouse too. He reached into his basket and pulled out a tiny wooden acorn, carved with a little heart. "I made this for you," he said. "So you always remember our picnic." Mouse hugged the acorn tightly. "I will treasure it," she said. They smiled at each other, and their friendship felt warm and strong, like a cozy blanket on a chilly day. 12

The sun began to set, and the friends packed up. "This picnic was wonderful," said the rabbit. "We should do it again!" Everyone agreed. Mouse and Little Bear walked home together. "Thank you for making everything just right," said Mouse. "Thank you for being my friend," said Little Bear. They promised to have another picnic very soon. 13

On the way home, Little Bear thought about the day. He had learned that kindness and sharing make friendship stronger. Mouse felt happy and safe. She knew that Little Bear would always think of her needs. They stopped by the tall oak tree where they first met. "Same time next week?" asked Little Bear. "Yes!" squeaked Mouse. They shook paws, and their hearts felt full.
