A Chapter from the Book
The Little Aardvark - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL
In the quiet desert, when the sky turns dark and the stars blink awake, a little aardvark steps out of his cozy burrow. His sandy tan fur glows softly in the moonlight. He wiggles his long snout and sniffs the cool air. 'Time to explore!' he whispers. His tall ears stand up straight, listening for nighttime sounds. Every night is a new adventure for this curious little explorer. 1
The little aardvark loves the nighttime. The desert is quiet and peaceful. He sniffs the ground with his long snout. He digs with his strong front claws. 'Sniff, sniff, dig, dig!' he says happily. He is looking for tasty bugs. The sand is soft and cool. He feels brave and free under the big starry sky. 2
As he wanders, the aardvark spots something new. A strange little creature is digging near a cactus. It has golden-brown scales that shine like tiny shields. Its small pointed face peeks out shyly. 'Hello,' says the aardvark gently. 'I'm digging for bugs. Do you like bugs too?' The pangolin blinks his tiny dark eyes and gives a tiny nod. 3
The pangolin is shy at first. He hides behind a rock, but his thick scaled tail sticks out. The aardvark smiles warmly. 'Don't be scared,' he says. 'I love digging! Watch this.' He digs fast with his big claws. The pangolin watches and then steps forward. 'I love digging too,' he whispers. 'And I love sniffing for bugs.' 4
The two new friends dig side by side. The pangolin uses his long curved claws to scoop the sand. The aardvark uses his strong front claws to make a hole. 'Sniff, sniff!' they both say. They find crunchy beetles and wiggly worms. 'Yum!' says the aardvark. 'These are the best bugs ever!' The pangolin giggles. 'You're right!' he says. 'Digging is more fun with a friend.' 5
After their snack, the aardvark has an idea. 'Let's explore together,' he says. 'I know a path through the quiet desert.' The pangolin nods. 'Okay,' he says. 'Lead the way.' They walk past tall cacti and smooth stones. The moon is big and round. The desert is full of soft shadows. The two little friends feel happy and brave together. 6
They walk and walk. The pangolin's short legs get tired. 'Are we there yet?' he asks. 'Almost!' says the aardvark. 'I smell something sweet.' He sniffs the air with his long snout. 'It's coming from over there.' They follow the sweet smell. It leads them to a small hill. 'Look!' says the aardvark. 'Do you see that glow?' 7
Behind the hill, they find a secret garden. It is full of flowers that glow in the dark! The blossoms shine pink, blue, and yellow. 'Wow!' says the pangolin. His scales sparkle in the light. 'I've never seen anything like this!' The aardvark's eyes grow wide. 'Me neither!' he says. 'It's like a dream.' The garden is quiet and magical. 8
The two friends step into the glowing garden. The flowers feel soft and warm. 'Let's play hide-and-seek!' says the aardvark. He hides behind a big glowing flower. The pangolin looks around with his tiny eyes. 'I see your tail!' he giggles. They run and chase each other. The glowing flowers light up their happy faces. It is the best game ever. 9
Tired from playing, they sit under a giant glowing blossom. 'I'm glad we met,' says the aardvark. 'Me too,' says the pangolin. 'You're not shy anymore.' The pangolin smiles. 'I felt shy at first,' he says. 'But you were kind.' They watch the flowers glow. They listen to the quiet desert. 'Friendship is like this garden,' says the aardvark. 'Full of light.' 10
The pangolin looks at the glowing flowers. 'I wish I could dig here,' he says. 'The sand looks soft.' The aardvark grins. 'Let's dig!' he says. They dig together in the garden. Their claws make small holes. The glowing flowers sway. 'This is perfect,' says the pangolin. 'We can dig and sniff and play.' 'And we can come back,' says the aardvark. 11
The sky starts to turn pink. 'The sun is coming,' says the aardvark. 'We should go home.' The pangolin nods. 'Will you come back with me tomorrow night?' he asks. 'Of course!' says the aardvark. 'We'll explore the glowing garden again.' They promise to meet at the same spot. Then they hurry home through the quiet desert as the stars fade. 12
The aardvark and the pangolin become the best of friends. Every night they meet and dig for bugs. Sometimes they visit the glowing garden. They play hide-and-seek and eat sweet nectar. 'I'm so glad we found each other,' says the pangolin. 'Me too,' says the aardvark. 'We make a great team.' Their shared love of nighttime adventures keeps them together. 13
One night, the pangolin brings a tiny gift. It is a shiny pebble from the glowing garden. 'For you,' he says. The aardvark's eyes sparkle. 'Thank you!' he says. He gives the pangolin a feather he found. 'And this is for you.' They both smile. 'Friends share things,' says the aardvark. 'And friends dig together,' says the pangolin. They dig a new hole and laugh. 14
As the moon rises, the two friends sit on a hill. 'I used to be scared of the dark,' says the pangolin. 'But not anymore.' 'Why?' asks the aardvark. 'Because I have you,' says the pangolin. The aardvark smiles. 'And I have you,' he says. They watch the stars. They know they will always have each other for nighttime adventures. And that is the best feeling of all.
