The Girl and the Little Rabbit

The Girl and the Little Rabbit

Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In a sunny garden with tall green grass, a girl named Mia spots a tiny movement near the bushes and discovers a cream-white rabbit with light brown patches and long pink-lined ears. Wearing her favorite yellow shirt and blue overalls, Mia kneels down slowly and whispers a quiet hello, determined not to scare the little creature away. When a loud bird chirp sends the rabbit darting back under the bush, Mia does not chase it. Instead she watches from a distance and thinks about what the rabbit needs to feel safe.

That evening Mia asks her mother for a book about rabbits and learns that they need room to hop and play as well as quiet spots to rest. The next morning she gathers a cardboard box, soft blankets, a small tunnel, fresh grass and dandelion leaves, and a tiny wooden house from her friend next door. She builds a spacious enrichment area in a quiet corner of the garden, then sits nearby and lets the rabbit discover it on its own. The rabbit sniffs the entrance, hops inside, explores the tunnel and nibbles the grass while Mia watches with delight.

As the days pass, Mia learns to read the rabbit's body language: ears up means curious, ears flat means resting, and a thumping back foot means the rabbit feels worried. She never chases or grabs it, cleans its area daily, and offers fresh food and water. The book shows young readers how patience, quiet observation and respect for an animal's feelings can turn a shy wild creature into a trusting friend, and it is suited to children and to adults reading aloud with them.

A Chapter from the Book

The Girl and the Little Rabbit - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In a sunny garden with tall green grass, a girl named Mia skipped along the path. She wore her favorite yellow shirt and blue overalls, and her wavy black hair bounced with a small side braid. Mia loved exploring and watching little creatures. Today, she hoped to find something special. Her red sneakers stopped when she saw a tiny movement near the bushes. 1

A little rabbit peeked out from under a leafy branch. Its creamwhite fur had light brown patches, and its long ears stood up straight with pink insides. The rabbit's nose twitched quickly as it looked at Mia. She knelt down slowly, her dark-brown eyes wide with wonder. 'Hello, little one,' she whispered softly, not wanting to scare it away. 2

The rabbit hopped a tiny bit closer, then stopped. Its round dark eyes watched Mia carefully. Mia stayed very still and patient. She noticed how the rabbit's ears turned toward every sound. 'You're listening to everything,' she said quietly. The rabbit twitched its nose and took another small hop. Mia felt a happy flutter in her chest. 3

Mia wanted to be friends, but she knew she had to be gentle. She remembered that animals need to feel safe. So she sat on the grass and waited. The rabbit hopped closer, sniffing the air. Its fluffy round tail wiggled. Mia smiled but didn't reach out. She let the rabbit decide what to do next. This was the beginning of their friendship. 4

The rabbit darted back under the bush when a bird chirped loudly. Mia didn't chase it. Instead, she watched from a distance. She saw how the rabbit liked to hide in small spaces. It felt safe under the bush. Mia thought about what the rabbit needed. 'You need a cozy place of your own,' she said. The rabbit's ears perked up as if it understood. 5

Mia decided to learn more about rabbits. She asked her mom for a book about them. That evening, she read about how rabbits need room to hop and play. They also need quiet spots to rest. Mia looked at the pictures and made a plan. She would build a special place for the little rabbit. Somewhere safe and full of fun. 6

The next morning, Mia gathered supplies. She found a big cardboard box, soft blankets, and a small tunnel. She also picked some fresh grass and dandelion leaves. Her friend next door gave her a tiny wooden house. Mia carried everything to the garden. She chose a quiet corner near the bush where the rabbit lived. 7

Mia set to work building the rabbit's new home. She made a spacious area with low walls so the rabbit could hop in and out. Inside, she placed the wooden house for hiding and the tunnel for playing. Soft blankets made a cozy bed. She added a shallow dish of water and a bowl of fresh food. The area was big enough for hopping and exploring. 8

When the rabbit peeked out, Mia sat quietly nearby. She didn't push or grab. She let the rabbit discover the new space on its own. The rabbit sniffed the entrance, then hopped inside. It explored the tunnel and nibbled the grass. Mia watched with delight. 'It's all for you,' she whispered. The rabbit's ears stood tall and happy. 9

The rabbit loved its new enrichment area. It hopped through the tunnel and rested in the wooden house. It played with a small ball Mia had added. Sometimes it flopped over in the soft blankets, completely relaxed. Mia learned to read the rabbit's body language. When its ears were up, it was curious. When they were flat, it was resting. 10

One afternoon, Mia noticed the rabbit thumping its back foot. She remembered from her book that this meant the rabbit felt worried. So she stayed back and spoke softly. 'It's okay, little friend,' she said. The rabbit calmed down and hopped over to her. It sniffed her hand and let her gently stroke its soft fur. Mia's heart swelled with happiness. 11

Mia always treated the rabbit with kindness and respect. She never chased it or picked it up when it didn't want to be held. She cleaned its area and gave it fresh food and water every day. The rabbit learned that Mia was safe. It began to hop over to greet her whenever she came into the garden. Their friendship grew stronger each day. 12

The rabbit showed Mia its happy moods by hopping and twisting in the air. Mia laughed with joy. She knew that a hopping rabbit was a happy rabbit. She also learned to be calm when the rabbit wanted quiet time. Respecting the rabbit's feelings made their bond special. The little rabbit trusted Mia completely, and Mia felt proud of her care. 13

As the days passed, Mia and the rabbit became the best of friends. The rabbit would follow her around the garden, its fluffy tail bobbing. Mia would sit and read aloud while the rabbit nibbled grass nearby. They understood each other without words. Mia's patience and care had created a beautiful friendship. The garden felt like a happy home for both of them. 14

Mia learned that pets need more than just food and water. They need respect and suitable care. They need space to hop and play, and cozy spots to rest. They need kindness and patience. Mia was glad she had watched and listened to the little rabbit. Because of her care, the rabbit was happy and healthy. And Mia had a wonderful friend.
