The Girl and the Little Piglet

The Girl and the Little Piglet

Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

On a bright spring morning, a curious girl named Lily sets out to explore her family farm, past the barn, the chicken coop, the horses and the cows. Near the edge of the farm, where the fence meets the woods, she hears a small, frightened squeak and discovers a tiny piglet hiding alone in the tall grass, shivering and smudged with mud. Speaking gently and offering an apple from her green satchel, Lily earns the piglet's trust and carries it home.

With help from Max, her friendly golden-brown dog, Lily builds the piglet a cozy bed of straw and an old blanket in a quiet corner of the barn, feeds it warm milk mixed with grain, and watches it grow stronger day by day. Noticing that her new friend needs more than food and rest, she prepares toys to push and chase and digs a shallow mud wallow for splashing and rolling. The piglet grows playful and confident, and the two become the best of friends.

This gentle story follows a child who pays attention to a small creature in need and responds with patience, kindness and practical care. Young readers see how trust is built slowly, how animals need both safety and room to play, and how thoughtful responsibility can turn fear into belonging. It suits children in the early primary years and makes a warm read-aloud for families and classrooms.

The Girl and the Little Piglet - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

On a bright spring morning, a girl named Lily pulled on her yellow rain boots. She slung her green canvas satchel over her shoulder and stepped outside. The farm was waking up, and the air smelled of fresh grass and flowers. Lily loved helping with the animals, but today she was just exploring. Little did she know, a big adventure was waiting for her. 1

Lily walked past the barn and the chicken coop, her dark side braid bouncing as she went. She checked on the horses and waved at the cows. Her warm light-brown skin glowed in the sunshine, and her round brown eyes sparkled with curiosity. Today felt special, like something wonderful was about to happen. She just didn't know what yet. 2

Near the edge of the farm, where the fence met the woods, Lily heard a tiny sound. It was a soft, scared squeak. She stopped and listened. There it was again! She pushed aside some tall grass and peeked through. What she saw made her heart go thump-thump. A little piglet was all alone, shivering in the dirt. 3

The piglet was very small, about the size of a cat. Its pink skin was smudged with muddy patches, and its floppy ears drooped low. It had a tiny curly tail and a round snout that twitched nervously. When it saw Lily, it tried to hide. "Don't be scared," Lily whispered gently. "I won't hurt you." 4

Lily knelt down slowly so she wouldn't frighten the piglet. She reached into her green satchel and pulled out a small apple. "Here, little one," she said softly, holding it out. The piglet sniffed the air, then took a tiny step forward. Its little dark eyes watched Lily closely. It was hungry and tired, and Lily's kind voice made it feel a little safer. 5

The piglet nibbled the apple, and Lily smiled her gentle smile. "You're all alone out here," she said. "Let's get you somewhere warm and safe." She scooped up the piglet carefully. It felt light and trembly in her arms. The piglet nuzzled against her red-and-white striped shirt. Lily knew just what to do. She would bring it home to the farm. 6

Back at the farm, Lily's dog, Max, came bounding over. He was a golden-brown shaggy dog with floppy ears and one white paw. Max wagged his bushy tail and sniffed the piglet gently. The piglet squeaked and hid behind Lily's boot. "It's okay," Lily said. "Max is friendly. He'll help us." Max sat down calmly, watching over them both. 7

Lily found a quiet corner in the barn. She made a cozy bed with soft straw and an old blanket. She set the piglet down gently. "There you go," she said. "This is your new home." The piglet looked around, its floppy ears perking up just a bit. It curled up in the warm straw and let out a tiny sigh. Lily felt happy inside. 8

Next, Lily brought the piglet some food. She mixed warm milk with a little grain in a shallow bowl. The piglet sniffed it, then began to eat. Its curly tail wiggled with delight. "You were hungry!" Lily laughed. Max lay nearby, his dark friendly eyes watching the little piglet. The barn felt warm and safe, full of gentle care. 9

The piglet grew stronger each day. Soon it was not so scared anymore. It followed Lily around the barn, its tiny hooves clicking on the floor. But Lily noticed the piglet needed more to do. It needed to play and explore. "Every animal needs fun things to do," Lily said. So she decided to prepare some special activities for her new friend. 10

Lily gathered soft toys and safe things for the piglet to explore. She found a small ball and a soft rope toy. She put them in the piglet's bed area. The piglet sniffed the ball and pushed it with its round snout. It rolled across the straw! The piglet squeaked with joy and chased after it. Max wagged his tail, watching the fun. 11

Lily knew piglets love mud. So she made a small mud wallow just for the piglet. She dug a shallow hole and filled it with water and soft dirt. "This is for you," she told the piglet. At first, the piglet just sniffed the mud. Then it stepped in with one tiny hoof. Soon it was happily splashing and rolling. Mud went everywhere! 12

The piglet loved its mud wallow and its toys. It grew playful and strong. Its pink skin was no longer muddy and sad, but clean and happy. The little red ribbon collar with the tiny brass bell jingled as it ran. Lily laughed as the piglet chased Max around the barnyard. They became the best of friends, full of joy and trust. 13

One evening, Lily sat on a hay bale and watched the piglet play. Max lay at her feet, his white paw resting on her boot. "You know," Lily said, "farm animals deserve thoughtful care. They need food and warmth and fun, just like us." The piglet climbed into her lap and snuggled close. Lily felt proud of how far her little friend had come. 14

Lily thought about the day she found the piglet, scared and alone. Now it was happy and healthy. She realized that even a small act of love can make a big difference. Her gentle care had changed the piglet's whole world. Max gave a soft woof, as if he agreed. Lily smiled and hugged the piglet close, feeling warm and grateful.
