In a bright, green wetland, a small beaver named Benny lives in a cozy lodge. With his warm brown fur, flat paddle tail and two big front teeth, he is always busy chewing branches and patching his dam. One misty morning he meets Hazel, a tall heron with soft blue-grey feathers, a long yellow beak and thin legs like reeds, who stands patiently in the shallow water watching for fish. Despite their different habits, the two become friends and spend their days together, Benny chatting as he works and Hazel listening with a quiet smile.

When a big storm blows through the wetland, it leaves a huge fallen tree lying across the stream. The pond begins to rise and the stream slows to a trickle. Benny chews and pushes with all his strength, but the tree is too thick; Hazel tries with her long beak, but it is too heavy. Realising neither can move it alone, they make a plan: Benny chews through the thick branches and pushes from the bottom, while Hazel lifts the lighter parts and pulls from the top. Working in turns and encouraging each other, they slowly set the water free again.

The story shows young readers how friendship and teamwork can solve problems that seem too big for one pair of hands, and that different abilities become strengths when they are combined. Told in simple, gentle language with a calm wetland setting, it suits children in the early primary years, whether read aloud at bedtime or enjoyed alone by those beginning to read independently.

The Beaver and the Heron - Author : Aysel Banu YAVUZAL

In a bright, green wetland, a small beaver named Benny lived in a cozy lodge. Benny had warm brown fur, a flat paddle tail, and two big front teeth. He was always busy, chewing branches and patching his dam. Every morning, he splashed into the pond, ready to work. The wetland was his happy home, full of chirping birds and croaking frogs. 1

One misty morning, a tall heron named Hazel stood in the shallow water. She had soft blue-grey feathers, a long yellow beak, and thin legs like reeds. Hazel was calm and patient, watching the water for fish. Benny waddled over and said, 'Hello! I'm Benny.' Hazel nodded gently. 'I'm Hazel,' she said. 'This is a lovely wetland.' From that day, they became friends. 2

Benny and Hazel spent their days together. Benny chewed sticks and stacked them neatly. Hazel stood still and watched the water ripple. They made a great team. Benny liked to chat while he worked, and Hazel listened with a quiet smile. The other animals noticed their friendship. 'Those two are always together,' said a frog. 'They make the wetland feel even happier,' said a duck. 3

Then one afternoon, a big storm blew through the wetland. The wind howled and the rain poured down. When the storm passed, Benny and Hazel found a huge fallen tree lying across the stream. 'Oh no!' cried Benny. 'This tree is blocking the water!' The pond began to rise, and the stream slowed to a trickle. The wetland was in trouble. 4

Benny rushed to the fallen tree. He chewed and chewed with his big front teeth, but the tree was too thick. He pushed with his strong legs, but it wouldn't budge. 'I can't move it alone,' he panted. Hazel flew over and landed beside him. 'Let me try,' she said. She pushed with her long beak, but the tree was too heavy. 'I can't do it either,' she sighed. 5

Benny felt worried. The water was rising, and the wetland was changing. 'What will we do?' he said. Hazel looked at the tree and then at Benny. 'We need a plan,' she said calmly. 'We can't do it alone, but maybe we can do it together.' Benny's eyes lit up. 'Together!' he said. 'That's a great idea!' 6

Benny and Hazel studied the tree. 'I can chew through the thick branches,' said Benny. 'And I can push from the bottom.' Hazel nodded. 'I can lift the lighter parts with my long beak,' she said. 'And I can pull from the top.' They decided to work as a team. Benny would chew and push, and Hazel would lift and pull. 7

Benny started chewing on a big branch. His teeth worked quickly, and wood chips flew. Hazel watched for the right moment. When the branch was weak, she grabbed it with her beak and pulled. 'Now!' she called. Benny pushed hard with his strong legs. The branch cracked and broke away. 'We did it!' cheered Benny. 'One down!' said Hazel. 8

They kept working. Benny chewed and pushed, while Hazel lifted and pulled. It was hard work, but they took turns and helped each other. 'You're doing great!' Hazel said. 'So are you!' Benny replied. Slowly, the fallen tree began to move. The other animals gathered to watch. 'They're really doing it!' said a turtle. 'Teamwork!' said a frog. 9

After a long, busy day, the tree finally shifted. The water began to flow again, first in a trickle, then in a happy rush. Benny and Hazel cheered. 'We did it together!' they shouted. The pond settled back to its peaceful level. The stream bubbled and sang. The wetland was calm and happy once more. All the animals clapped and cheered. 10

Benny and Hazel sat side by side, tired but proud. 'That was a big problem,' said Benny. 'But we solved it,' said Hazel. 'Because we worked as a team.' Benny nodded. 'You lifted and pulled, and I chewed and pushed. We make a great team!' Hazel smiled her gentle smile. 'Yes, we do,' she said. 'Friendship and teamwork can fix big troubles.' 11

From that day on, Benny and Hazel were even closer friends. They continued to care for the wetland together. Benny kept the dam strong, and Hazel kept watch over the stream. They knew that no problem was too big if they faced it together. The other animals learned from them too. 'If you need help, just ask,' said Benny. 'We're always here,' said Hazel. 12

The wetland flourished. The water flowed freely, and the animals lived happily. Benny and Hazel often sat by the pond at sunset, watching the sky turn pink. 'I'm glad we're friends,' said Benny. 'Me too,' said Hazel. 'And I'm glad we can solve problems together.' They watched a family of ducks swim by. The wetland was peaceful and full of life. 13

One day, a young beaver asked Benny, 'What's the secret to keeping the wetland safe?' Benny smiled. 'The secret is teamwork,' he said. 'When a problem comes, don't give up. Find a friend and work together.' Hazel nodded. 'Everyone has different strengths,' she said. 'Together, you can do almost anything.' The young beaver nodded, ready to help. 14

Benny and Hazel's friendship grew stronger every day. They showed that cooperation creates solutions. The wetland was a happy place, full of kindness and teamwork. And whenever a new problem appeared, Benny and Hazel faced it together. They knew that with a friend by your side, no trouble is too big. And the wetland stayed calm and beautiful for all the animals.
